It’s hard to introduce Sekar without talking about VIT. He was a student of VIT, and first served the institution in the 90s as Vice-Chairman. He contributed to the growth of the University from its humble beginnings as Vellore Engineering College. His leadership was instrumental in the founding years of the institution, and in preparing VEC to become VIT University.
Sekar is a rank holder in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Madras. He received his Master’s degree in Computer Science from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, USA.
During his leadership as Vice-Chairman of VEC, he introduced various additional branches including Computer Science, IT, Chemical and EEE. He diversified beyond engineering by starting MBA and MCA programmes. Mr.Sekar envisioned autonomy for the institute so that it can excel in curriculum, start new programmes and set high standards in education. He lead the institution in obtaining ISO certification, NBA accreditation and preparation to become a deemed university. His contributions paved the way for VEC to become a University.
Between his tenures at the institution, Sekar worked in the USA to get more experience from the wider world. He worked at IBM, NetClerk and Walmart.com. Walmart.com, USA conferred the “Best Engineering Manager” and “Best Achiever” awards. Sekar continuously tries to bring the best in the industry to the education world.
Sekar is currently the Vice President of VIT. He focuses on the university growth strategy, academic policies, international relations, public relations and alumni relations. He has brought in numerous improvements to benefit the students including STARS (Support the Advancement of Rural Students) scheme, Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) and the Semester Abroad Programme. VIT is recognized as one of the top engineering institutions in the country today, with a sprawling green campus of 18,500 students from around the world.
Mr.Sekar was bestowed the prestigious Young EDGE Award on 13 March 2012 in recognition of his innovative and useful contributions to the field of education. The Award is given to young academicians or academic administrators in recognition of their significant contributions to enhancing the quality of education and making a lasting impression in the field. Mr.Sekar received the award for initiating and implementing two of his pet projects , the STARS Scheme and the FFCS which have helped numerous students.
Mr.Sekar continues to lead the University towards realizing the vision of the Chancellor to put VIT among the top universities of the world.
