Primary and Backup MX Server Configuration | Design and Deployment GUIDELINE
You can find out, Primary and Backup MX Server Configuration. I’ve gone over the Mail Server Setup Requirements, Design, and Deployments in great detail. This video is a detailed guideline.
When configuring a mail server for inbound email, we rarely consider the backup MX server’s importance; instead, we establish a mail server as the domain’s primary MX server. That’s fine if the server is constantly available. All incoming emails will bounce if the principal server goes down. That’s why we have the option of configuring another Backup MX Server. During DNS MX record set up, we can configure both Primary MX record and Backup MX record. The DNS server maintains these Primary and Backup MX servers as a form of failover for inbound emails. Both the primary and backup MX servers are incoming mail servers, meaning they only process emails that come in. Outbound emails have nothing to do with MX records.
So, how does the Scenario work? How do the two servers function as failovers? Mail will be received by the backup MX server if the primary MX server goes down. However, because the Backup MX server has no users, it is unable to distribute to them. As a result, it will receive the emails and store them in its queue while waiting for the Primary MX server to wake up. It checks the availability of the primary MX server on a regular basis, and if the server is determined to be operational, it promptly forwards all emails to the Primary MX server. When the primary MX detects that the recipient users are on the server, it sends the messages to them right away.
