GNOME Ousts Elected Board Member in Secret, Tells Nobody for 2 Months

Secret meetings. No transparency. Total chaos at the GNOME Foundation as they remove Sonny Piers, one of their Board Members, without telling anyone. This all happens right as the GNOME Executive Director quits, GNOME announces dire financial circumstances, and a disastrous “5 year plan” focusing on DEI.

  • Guess their opinion is software should be Open-source.. but not the leadership. Their conduct seems identical to how a proprietary for-profit corp. would be run. Maybe they pissed away the grant on high-priced DEI consulting firms that were related/friends with the Shaman.

  • now i want to use something different for a DE … not much choice though, I would like to use XFCE but it has no wayland support so i dont

  • This is what happens when you preferentially hire political ideologues rather than tech nerds.

  • I mean, many of your questions are in fact rhetorical because everyone understands the corruption of organizations whether they be for profit, not for profit, etc. It's kind of like the clique-effect. People's behavior changes under different organizational circumstances and they behave badly. And then they do their best to pretend nothing every happened.

  • I am waiting for the new version of Gnome with a new, weird interface and a new version of GTK that will drop support for everything and rewrite everything from scratch for no reason.

  • The Gnome Foundation has promised to focus on DEI and they're delivering. I'm guessing Sonny Piers is a White man, and maybe he's not sufficiently enthuastic about DEI, not sufficiently antiwhite, so he has to go.

  • If Sonny Piers did something illegal, legal actions should be taken.
But if he didn't, then he got CoC'd and Gnome should be investigated for abusing the trust of the GnoFo members and backers.

  • The Gnome Foundation should have respect for their users as they deserve a lot better than this and is against their code of conduct.

  • Hey guys.
Can we hate on women A little less please?
I think its just not the relevant thing to focus on when were discussing GNOME's lack of transparency. Even if you personally feel like the reasons GNOME is failing to communicate apply to women in general, its significantly more likely that they will listen if we don't give them easy outs for their guilt.

I think its easy for honest criticism to grow into dishonest criticism as perspectives are rejected categorically. GNOME declaring lunduke to be dishonest with his criticisms has an effect on the audience he pulls in, this in turn has an effect on the things he benefits from saying due to this shift in his audience.
Whats worse is that this is something that can be forced upon you, sometimes even dishonestly in defense of some other transgression.
Those who don't want to be labeled will avoid you, those that don't care will be biased towards the things your labeled as. This is A feedback loop.

Bryan. Isn't it frustrating that when they say you don't respect minority's, it sends you people that actually have real issues to work out which they blame on on entire category's of people they don't understand?
All while their sanitized environments mimic the structural issues that caused the oppression they're trying to compensate for in the first place.

  • gnu+linux, do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior saint ignucius? for he may bless your computer. in the chiurch of emacs even use of the devil's editor VI VI VI is allowed as long as you stay true to the spirit of Free as in libre and opensource software. when you partake in the foo-bar mitzvah you will gaon acces to our sacree writings also known as the soirce

  • Isn't this exactly like the witch hunts?

  • No matter what was the actual cause for ousting the board member, the way it was done makes other board members absolutely unacceptable for any elected positions, especially in community projects. This shady behavior simply cannot be tolerated. They all must be kicked out and their transgression must be widely publicised to ensure they never get elected anywhere again.

  • GNOME has decided that Lenin be outed and Stalin be put in his place. All will proceed as usual. Time to move to Windows.

  • So happy pop os! Is making cosmic. I hope it's a success.

  • Simple. 10% of people on Earth are demons. These demons thrive in darkness. You will never get transparency from them.

  • I have my doubts that the one Code of Conduct complaint he received was the deciding factor in his removal, especially when there are many cases of GNOME maintainers being consistently rude to users and contributors – which I believe to have received many complaints – yet nothing has changed with their behavior, nor have they been removed from the community…

  • If anything could make me switch to COSMIC, this is it. GNOME is INFESTED with ABC-SNAKES.

  • I have interacted with GNOME people as a fellow programmer. I have never met nastier and more stuck-up people. Of course they are all going to DEI now.

  • Sounds like lawyers told them not to talk. It will come out in time, jumping to conclusions with no evidence is really stupid.

  • Code of conduct committee? Heh, found the marxism.

  • Looks like a typical marxist takeover. 100% about politics and culture.
I also think there are pressure that in the long term is to make sure you can not escape telemetry by switching to linux. I suspect the next fight will be "anonymized user data"

  • Gnome software is total jank and this is how they (hr karens larping as software andys) treat the one person who can be bothered to write anything using gjs. lmao

  • Imagine spending so much of you sweat and tears building software and a bunch of people that are 100% not technical, profit from your work while theses scumbags play game of thrones against each other and none believers. unreal.

  • You should consider summarizing your articles. If I wanted more indepth I could just read the article faster than watching the video. Maybe I am just not your main audience, but 40 minutes to talk about a gnome board member is longer than my attention lasts.

  • moTzilluh but not guh-nome? I've gotten really tired of all these dumb pronunciation rules weirdos come up with for their software so…I dunno.

  • I did feel I disturbance in the landlines and the chakras when this happened and now I know why 😅

  • Presumably the forum was picked as suitable seeing as everyone saying "Shaman" on there had previously been banned.
Guessing said Shaman isn't the person on the way out.

  • Geek committee, he probably made fun of the "shaman" and everyone got their panties in a bunch because of their wokeness within the gnome camp.

  • @Bryan, the GNOME Foundation is made of people, start saying their names.

  • What happens in Politburo meetings stays in Politburo meetings.

  • GNOME Is a hindrance to Linux as a platform. Contrary to what Bryan thinks nothing bad would happen if GNOME was to disappear. COSMIC is likely going to replace GNOME's position as the most used desktop if System76 plays it correctly.

  • I can see to possibilities here. Firstly, he was against the DEI stuff and was ousted OR he was ousted because of something that would look very bad were it to be made public and the DEI thing happened immediately after as a preemptive reply to any criticism they might get when the cat gets out of the bag.

  • I really like Gnome. I hope all this turmoil and drama gets settled.

  • How are they expecting to get funding if they keep to be so hostile??
