The role of open source in the public sector

In this talk, open source practitioners and proponents from different corners of the European open source ecosystem (national governments, a European advocacy group and national open technology association) will present their views on the role of open source in the public sector. We will try to flesh out aspects of “the open source way” that contribute to the efficient development of public services and, in turn, are beneficial to citizens and businesses. As any engagement with open source should never be a one-way street, we will also discuss how the public sector can contribute to the open source ecosystem.

The DigitALL Public Conference on 20-21-22 April was the closing event of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Digital and the Interoperability solutions for public administrations, businesses and citizens (ISA²) programmes. Together with the Member States, these programmes have helped build cross-border public services for citizens, provided free interoperable solutions to companies and connected various organisations in different sectors. The DigitALL Public conference celebrated the next step in this journey while looking ahead towards Europe’s digital future.
This online conference brought together inspiring speakers from European and international Institutions, Member States and industry, to look at the successes in the digital transformation of public services across the EU and celebrate the beginning of the new Digital Europe Programme.
