This tutorial is still relevant, and should work nearly identically for users of Windows 10 in 2017.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 operating system (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba,Lenovo, and Samsung).

Users who are facing boot issues after the upgrade can try booting their computers into Windows 10 Safe Mode through a couple of simple methods as outlined below:

Advanced Startup Options

Step 1: Right-click Start button and navigate the mouse over Shut down or sign out, which reveals a bunch of power options.

Step 2: Press and Hold Shift key and then click Restart. Wait until your computer reboots and enters into the Advanced Options screen.

Alternatively, you can access Advanced options via Settings app (Windows key + I) and then navigate to Update & security – Recovery. At this moment an Advanced Startup screen followed by Restart now option should appear on the screen. Just click it.

Step 3: Your computer will now boot into an option-laden screen as shown below. Just hit Troubleshoot to continue.

Step 4: Click Advanced options – Startup Settings and then hit Restart.

Step 5: Let your PC automatically boot into another Startup Settings screen, with a bunch of startup options listed along with a selection number. Just press the ‘4’ key or ‘F4′ key on your keyboard to initiate the reboot into Safe Mode. You may also boot into Safe Mode with Networking, by pressing ‘5’ or ‘F5′.

System Configuration Utility

Step 1: Right-click Start button and choose Run.

Step 2: Type msconfig in the Start – Run box and hit Enter.

Step 3: Wait until System Configuration is launched, then go to the Boot tab and check the Safe boot option under Boot options. Also ensure Minimal is selected as the sub-option. Besides, you can enable the Network option, if you wish to maintain network connectivity in Safe Mode.

Step 4: After you have chosen the desired options, just hit OK or Apply button, and restart your computer. Your computer should now boot directly into Safe Mode.

Every time I start up my laptop it says there was a problem shutting down and needs to restart. I shut down properly so it isnt something I have done wrong. This all started with the windows 10 upgrade. Note I didnt want the windows 10 upgrade and always said no when prompted. I did it on its own!

Thank you very much. It was very nerve racking to not have the computer starting up and then to think I would click on next and start installing Windows 10 on top of my old system! But yes, just one more click and then can go to the repair options. Thank you so much 🙂 Yosarin QLD, Australia

If your computer is having issues, it could very well be a hardware issue. If your hard-drive, motherboard or any vital component to your machine is physically damaged, no amount troubleshooting tools will be able to fix it. All hard drives will fail in time. This tutorial will fix common software-related issues. Don't expect it to fix every imaginable reason that Windows 10 can't start up.

I was playing on my pc then it went to blue screen… I got machine_bullshit_exception and whea_uncorrectable_error the second time and i can't do anything now :/ can't restore or fix my windows, tried reinstalling but doesn't get to the actual installation and gets stuck on the blue screen or just restarts and gets back to the blue screen again. This sucks :c
Safe mode isn't an option either because it can be only accessed when you're past the blue screen. i'm stuck :/

After installing a GeForce driver yesterday my PC is at a blue screen after the logo. Won't do anything else. I don't have anything on a disk. Would I just try option 2 (Hard Drive) at the start and still get to the help screens? I figured if I can just get Windows 10 started in Safe Mode I'd be able to do a restore.
