  • I think many people have the same problem I'm currently experiencing. I've used Macrium Reflect Free to clone my current OS (M.2 250GB – MBR) into a newer M.2 (1GB – GPT). I've already converted the newer M.2 to MBR through Command Prompt but when I finished cloning the previous OS, it went back to GPT and I'm getting the error "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified." after using the bcdedit /store I:bootbcd command. I'm open to any suggestions at this point. Thanks ahead!

  • When i try to open bcdedit on my cloned disk it says the file cant be found

  • How you use command prompt if the windows not boot, only bios are accessible

  • I'm getting a "the boot configuration data store could not be opened.

The system cannot find the file specified." error after typing the firt bcd command. My drive is G: I still get an error even after changing the drive letter.

  • I have a GPT nvme drive which I cloned from an GPT HDD. Can I use this method to fix the not booting issue after cloning?

  • If you can't access the new drive from the current command line open up another instance of console as admin, type cd / then the letter of the new drive followed by a colon and then just bcdedit

  • Does anyone know how this works for GPT? Couldn´t find any video about that :/

  • Hey, when i try the command a little bit modified bcs my bcd is not at the same place as yours |bcdedit /storage E:WindowsBootDVDEFICBD|, my windows boot manager has no device and My windows boot loader device has a weird name |ramdisk=[boot]sourceboot.wim,{a lot of symbols and numbers}| Wat does that mean ? and wat do i do ? (btw both of my disks are MBR)

  • If SF card to clone to usb after error come what can i do please make one video how to SF card to pendrive bootable image transfer…

  • Very nice, I just saw this video wondering if this still works ? I Had clone a Samsung SSD from HDD in Windows 11 but unable to boot SSD after I replace HDD , should I do the steps to change SSD to I: or should there be a better way to solve this ? HDD is too slow in Windows 11! Thanks.

  • 'The boot configuration data store could not be opened. Access is denied.' Why?????

  • hi there. thank you so much. I have been trying to clone my hard drive and every time I have an error with a number. I need your help. thank you.

  • Excellent directional video. Please next time turn down the music it's too loud. Thank you for making this video

  • I appreciate your efforts, but the video is absolutely not clear. Thumb down

  • My conputer laptop (Dell 7570 2in1 Windows 10) still won’t boot. After i upgraded my SSD into a larger one. I cloned it using Macrium reflect 8. Then i was trying to use my larger SSD and installed it into my laptop. The computer did not boot. I then installed back my older smaller Ssd. Tried to check the problem, diagnosed it, reset settings.. and for some reason now. It totally won’t boot. I’m stuck in this rebooting phase.
I did check my computer as well with F12 and everything is good. Except for the battery.
My initial plan was to upgrade my SSD into 1tb, also i added 16gb RAM, then a new battery. So far i only installed the RAM and SSD. But i’m stuck in this part my computer won’t boot anymore. Plsss help!

  • The boot configuration data store could not be opened.

The system cannot find the file specified.

  • You wouldn't normally have two Active System partitions on the same compter at the same time, so this would affect the drive letter on the boot drive. For example if you are replacing your drive with a cloned SSD the drive letter would change after you remove the old drive thus affecting the assignment in BCD.

  • It would be more understandable with a better sound recording and without a useless background music. Background music is usually for receipts.

  • after cloning the ssd I cloned to booted but after windows logo it only turns into black screen

  • i am getting this error

    bcdedit /store f:bootbcd /set {bootmgr} device partition=f:

The set command specified is not valid.

Run "bcdedit /?" for command line assistance.

    The parameter is incorrect.

  • Yes, It Works!!!

I must admit I didn’t think that could be my case a reason to not be able to boot. I spent so much time to investigate the possible reasons – Incorrect Boot Order (Device Priority), Wrong Boot Mode (Legacy/UEFI), Wrong Connection Mode (IDE/AHCI) but everything seemed normal…and finally came to your video for a BCD. I made all your required changes and I was astonished! Yes, It has Worked! It is still a little foggy for me so I have to go in more deep to clarify this issue for myself.

    Thanks a lot!!!

  • Hi, when I check my E drive in the store it says (boot manger) = E , but in (default and osd device) it says unknown, but the drive is working ok, is this normal. Thanks.

  • While this is good information, my problem is for the second reason. I need to use a bootable media 🙁

  • Wth is with the distracting/annoying music, for god's sake our drives are not working this is the last thing we need atm.

  • Doesnt work for me. My Taerget SSD clone is assigned as disk F. When i type
    bcdedit /store F:bootbcd
The system tell me that it can't found the storage.

  • Very good .. thank you.. 🙂 but what do you need to type to change for example:
In {bootmgr}, the ‘default’ line on my old drive entry is set to {current} ., but the cloned one shows {default}.. what difference does this make?
    Thank you!

  • Hi, is there an explanation on how to fix windows booting probleme with GPT cloned drivers ( SSD ). Thank you so much.

  • I tried this, but it didn't work for me. My Asus ROG Strix doesn't seem to allow my Cloned Drive to Boot from it. I really want to find a solution…

  • EaseUS only provides free software to copy files which you can do in Windows anyway. If you want to clone a drive or even just make a bootable USB you have to pay for it
