How to create Firefox bookmarks using Group Policy and Registry Editor

Creating a Bookmark is a piece of cake, irrespective of the browser you are using. However, if Mozilla Firefox is your go-to browser, and you often create bookmarks, you can use the Group Policy Editor and the Registry Editor to get the same job done. You will, however, first need to download and integrate Firefox with Group Policy.

Let’s assume that you are an IT admin in an organization and you want to use the same set of bookmarks in all the networked computers’ Firefox browsers. Instead of creating those bookmarks on each computer, you can create one set on one computer and use the Group Policy Import/Export method to apply them on all the other computers.

How to create Firefox bookmarks using Group Policy

To create Firefox bookmarks using Group Policy, follow these steps-

  1. Press Win+R to open the Run prompt.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and hit the Enter button.
  3. Navigate to Bookmarks in Computer Configuration.
  4. Double-click on Bookmark 01 and select the Enabled option.
  5. Enter the Title, URL, Favicon URL, Placement, and Folder name.
  6. Click the OK button.

At first, you have to open the Local Group Policy Editor. For that, press Win+R to display the Run prompt, type gpedit.msc, and press the Enter button. Once it is opened, navigate to the following path-

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Mozilla > Firefox > Bookmarks

Here you can find fifty settings named Bookmark 01, 02, and so forth. Double-click on Bookmark 01, and select the Enabled option. Next, you have to enter all the details to bookmark a page. For example, you have to enter the bookmark title, web page URL, favicon URL (optional), and a folder name (optional).

Also, you need to choose the Placement. For that, you can expand the drop-down list and choose either Menu or Toolbar.

At last, click on the OK button to save all changes.

Similarly, you need to repeat all these steps to bookmark multiple pages. As it has upto Bookmark 50, you can bookmark upto fifty web pages.

How to bookmark webpage in Firefox using Registry Editor

To bookmark a webpage in Firefox using Registry Editor, follow these steps-

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type regedit and press the Enter button.
  3. Click on the Yes button.
  4. Navigate to Policies in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  5. Right-click on Policies > New > Key.
  6. Name it as Mozilla.
  7. Right-click on Mozilla > New > Key.
  8. Name it Firefox.
  9. Right-click on Firefox > New > Key.
  10. Name it as Bookmarks.
  11. Right-click on Bookmarks > New > Key.
  12. Name it as 1.
  13. Right-click on 1 > New > String Value.
  14. Name it as Title.
  15. Double-click on Title and enter the bookmark title as Value data.
  16. Repeat the steps to create Favicon, Folder, URL, etc. String Values and enter respective details.

It is recommended to create a System Restore point before following these steps.

At first, press Win+R to open the Run prompt, type regedit, and press the Enter button. Windows shows the User Account Control window after clicking the Enter button. If so, click on the Yes option.

After opening the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPolicies

Here you have to create four keys and sub-keys inside Policies. For that, right-click on Policies, select the New > Key option, and name it as Mozilla.

Right-click on the Mozilla key, select the New > Key option, and set the name as Firefox.

Right-click on the Firefox key, choose the New > Key option and name it as Bookmarks.

In the Bookmarks key, you have to create different bookmarks according to your requirements. To create a bookmark, you need the URL, a title, favicon URL, etc. However, it is possible to organize them in one folder to manage them in the future.

For that, right-click on Bookmarks > New > Key, and name it as 1.

You have to enter the title, favicon URL, webpage URL as a separate String Value. To do so, right-click on 1 > New > String Value, and name it as Title.

Double-click on it and enter the title of your bookmark. If you do not set a title, it shows the favicon only.

Similarly, create the following String Values and enter the details as it says:

  • Favicon
  • Folder
  • Placement
  • URL

For the second bookmark, you need to create another sub-key in the Bookmarks key and name it as 2 and so on.
