How to fix and run C&C Generals Zero Hour in Windows 7 Tutorial/Manual

Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour installation and setup might be problematic after all these years because of various available versions (original CDs like myself, Deluxe, The First Decade, Ultimate and Origin). The game simply doesn’t work just after the installation of patching and we must apply all the annoying fixes. It’s also getting more and more painful when we have Vista, Windows 7/8/10 with 64bit versions because back in the 2003 C&C Generals Zero Hour was made only for the Windows XP (yep, it was criticized back then for no 98/2000 support and being XP exclusive). So to get it started, after you have installed and patched the Zero Hour to the 1.04 you might see that the game is not responding, and you don’t even have the launcher running. To fix it, you must download and unpack that file below:

After that, the game should be working perfectly, thus you will be able to install some mods like these from the list below (I’ve chosen ROTR to show how much can you customize it)

Then might install Rise Of The Reds 1.85 with the patch.

When you launch the game, you might notice that the camera height is way too small to play, there is a global fix for that here

You put the GameData.ini to the Your Zero Hour Folder/Data/INI and change the following data
“CameraHeight = 510.0
MaxCameraHeight = 510.0
MinCameraHeight = 120.0”
MaxCameraHeight to 510.0 to support the widescreen resolution to it’s finest (remember that first you have to change the resolution in options.ini that is located in My Documents/Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data. Simply change the Resolution field to support the 16:9 like Resolution = 1280 720 and save it).

While zoom is ok, you might also need some other tweaks like custom cursors, Widescreen GUI and classic icons with hotkeys visible.

TIP FOR THE OWNERS OF NVIDIA CARDS – Sometimes you might see during the game of the vanilla Zero Hour and mods that the graphic is flickering and it becomes unable to play after some time. The fix is really simple but I had to do some research before, simply open the NVIDIA Control Panel and go the “Manage 3D Settings”. There under the “Antialiasing – mode” choose “Enhance the application settings”. It fixes that very annoying issue.
