Your claim that S3 is cheap is not backed up by actual price comparison: it's actually 10 times more costly than dedicated server storage! I can have that 1TB storage AND dedicated server (CPU, RAM), and a 100MB/s line with unlimited usage for less than $10/month. So, for backup, using S3 is paying the same price as dedicated servers, but with less freedom/control over the way you use it, and with bad performance (no way i can backup as fast as with a dedicated server). Perhaps the advantage of S3 is that you can get much more bandwidth than 100MB/s, but then, at what price?
