Local Area Networks (LAN)
Set of devices connected with the same location (Office/Building) .
Devices in the same room, in the same building, or in a campus of buildings
Data is transferred at an extremely faster rate in Local Area Network.
Local Area Network provides higher security.

Ethernet LANs
Uses cables for the links between nodes, and because many types of cables use copper wires or fiber-optic cables.
Often referred as wired LANs

Wireless LANs
Do not use wires or cables, instead using radio waves for the links between nodes.
Ethernet is communication standard developed for communication of network devices in LAN.
Define the protocols rules , cabling, Connectors on the ends of the cables, Identify Device and everything else required to create an Ethernet LAN.
In 1983, Ethernet was standardized as IEEE 802.3 by IEEE.
An Ethernet cable is the physical, encased wiring over which the data travels as per standards.

Ethernet LAN switch
Provides centralized location to connect devices with in the LAN.
Ethernet cables –
Connects different Ethernet devices or nodes to one of the switch’s Ethernet ports
Is the physical, encased wiring over which the data travels as per standards.
Router
The router connects the LAN to the WAN, in this case to the Internet.
Wireless LAN
Typical SOHO LANs today also support wireless LAN connections
