4M Linux Is A Strange Beast…But I Kinda Like It

4MLinux is a small, independent Linux distribution with a strong focus on the four “M’s” of computing: Maintenance (system rescue Live CD), Multimedia (full support for a huge number of image, audio and video formats), Miniserver (DNS, FTP, HTTP, MySQL, NFS, Proxy, SMTP, SSH, and Telnet), and Mystery (meaning a collection of classic Linux games).

  • Hey DT! Please look at Mageia and/or OpenMandriva ROME, the two successors to Mandrake Linux

  • Crap distro with a lot of junk from 15 years ago. It's so bad that even maintainer's dog and his family refuse to use it. Few years back I looked for small linux with fsarchiver and found BakAndImgCD which is a tiny 4MLinux spin but it doesn't work with eMMC drives so it's useless in my case. Went back to Porteus as their niche distro has better support and it is much easier to make custom iso with additional software.

  • Got giddy and thought 4mb of ram like the early times. Still cool though.

  • Unetbootin are so old, especially when we have something like ventoy

  • Ey DT Could you some day make a review to Loc-OS Linux (An uruguayan distro based in Debian 12 without systemd – Not Devuan) ?- Thank you in advance

  • my boy ain't tsundere, doesn't wanna speak "baka"

  • That's strange, but XMMS does not play radio streams.

  • DT I remember asking you to review 4MLinux 3 or 4 years ago, I still have it, always been a favorite.

  • My homie asking the CPU usage and the kernel version but not reading the top part of that conky part. Interesting that there it says 2 GB of RAM being used. I guess it takes into account the cache/buffer part too.

But, having multiple tools for the same job, but lacking util-linux and a full featured browser like firefox is … questionable. I'm curious if there is a good reason behind that.

  • This is the kind of distribution you run when you have borked your system.

  • Strange enough to try, methinks, which makes my day. Happy days to you!

  • I have no idea why you didn't just peruse htop to see what dock was running.

  • The perfect distro would be minimalist, provide complete multimedia codecs, a good terminal emulator like kitty, and provide access to Debian repositories. I do not need distro-selected notepads, multimedia players, games, file managers, etc. I like selecting the DE, office suite, file manager, and so on.

  • Supposed to be minimal, but actually comes with a big bunch of second hand software (sorry). Why not instead coming with barely anything installed, and leave it to the user to install the software he prefers.

  • Misread this, thought you were doing a Linux install at 4 AM.

  • So basically its for computers, that was built in 1990's
