98% Of Linux and FOSS Funding Is Spent On Political Trash – Rollin' Rambles – Jody Bruchon Tech

Where does the money go? Not to Linux, GNOME, or Mozilla. If you paid someone $1000 to build a deck and they spend $980 of it on something stupid and $20 of it on your deck, would you be fine with that? The cancer of open source software needs to be de-funded.

  • Corporations man. Corpos are taking over. They are the ones pushing pushing all this woke trash. Corporations are taking over FOSS because they have realized there is money in it. They are the ones pushing their woke goons in order to remove all the proper nerds. This way they can control FOSS projects. Look at how many original FOSS contributors and personalities were cancelled and replaced by corporate approved wokies.

  • bro, this is so true I see so many "newcomers" in the IT scene its crazy… Normies ruin everything, last time I had a girl trying to explain to me how genAI works… that girl doesnt know how to "install" a GTA SA crack, hold me

  • i want to support the linux desktop but i don't want to fund this unrelated nonsense :((

  • Jody, I hope this is not too late and you get to see this. I'll be more cynic, and I hope this is useful.

I don't think this idea of you getting donations will work. And frankly I don't think it's that good of an idea in the first place.
Probably you'll get initially some money, but I see there's not that many people here. After an initial push, you'll struggle and have to make videos or posts begging for money and you'll quickly hate the situation. It's a sad reality. I would donate, but I won't be able to help much. I'm not rich, I do have over the average income, but Romania's average income of about $600/ month (we use /month here, not /year) is weeeell below your US incomes and prices.

I'd say is to look for forming a team. Get some more people with the same mindset and goals. They don't have to be all programmers (might actually help if someone is from a different field, might help a lot with exposure). Surely there are others there too. And see together what you can do.

Also, I would like to say again (I said it in another comment), Opensource, be it GPL or MIT or any other licence, has IMO basically NOTHING to do with the ability to have a project cancer-free. You can have the most permisive licence and still only you do the commits or manually selectively take specific code from what others pushed as contributions. There's no license that I know of that can enforce you to accept code from others or to accept people in the project. So doing something, but not open source, I don't think that matters, That is I don't think you should focus on not being open source. Though you might/should, but for other reasons.

And with the above in mind, I'd like to enforce what somebody else mentioned in a comment: check FUTO. They're approaching this from another angle. Not to directly fight the cancer, but to fight the big corporations freeloading on open source development. Because there have been many well-known cases where people had to stop developing for crazy things like getting paid for food, electricity and taxes. Insane, I know. Some of them even protested on them getting a mere $1000 / month while now trillion-dollar corporations used their products in gigantic amounts and provided exactly $0.

So, what FUTO is doing, mainly with their recently-named "source first" licence is make sure the developers are getting paid. That they can do this full time, without having to be lucky to receive donations. Or having to beg at all. On the simple principle that if you make money using that product, then you should pay for it.
Maybe check them more and maybe even contact them ? They might fund you, depending on what you want to work on. They're aware that they current money won't last forever, so they are selective on what they fund, as it has to be projects that can grow enough to sustain themselves in the not-so-distant future. Even if you don't get to work with them, having a connection with them should be beneficial, maybe something in the future can be made and them knowing about you beforehand can be good for both parties. Also you might get to know other like-minded people through them.

  • JB:

I know this is a long shot, but Louis Rossman has a project going wherein people with software to develop can get underwritten. Your Linux redo, if it was ever taken up, would be big, maybe huge by comparison, but at a minumum, maybe there's a fit for something less grandiose……

Improving the user experience – exaclty the sort of thing Rossman would be up for…seems like it might be worth checking out…

  • Concerning 9:29 …. I agree with you 100%. Just to add to your knowledge and those reading on, and get your Urbandictionary ready. Another word for a "troon" is "Tucute." TBH, and not to be overly pedantic, you would have been a bit more accurate referring to them as tucutes. They are horrible people. They have done more to hurt transsexual people than nearly anyone else. They call actual transsexual women "Truscum" or "Transmedicalist." I have seen tucutes on forums talking about their "girlcock" and referring to hormones as "titty skittles" and it makes me so upset to be honest. Many will just run off and "detransition" while actual transsexuals have to deal with the blowback. I am not at all faulting most folks for not understanding what impacts like, what, less than 1% of society (real gender dysphoria is much lower like .5%), but my goodness I wish more people had the nuance expressed in this video to understand the difference between the so-called troons or tucutes and what you describe as "genuine transgender people."

  • Social Justice, Feminism, LGBTBBQ activism, BLM, Antifa, all of these are species under the same genus, that genus being critical Marxism, which is a form envisioned by Antonio Gramsci that sees the revolution requiring the infiltration and subversion of ALL aspects of culture. Wokeness in a nutshell is critical marxism evolved to attack the west directly.

Luckily the tide seems to be shifting against them (at least to a degree), and we need to continue to gatekeep with extreme prejudice wherever we can, and never fund anything you know they are involved in. There can and never will be a middle ground, no point trying to reason or co-exist, no quarter is the only way to purge our beloved hobbies.

Also, yeah, I would be interested in donating to your deshittification project.

  • What's troubling is that in comparison to what's ahead, these will be like "the good old days".

  • i love listening to you jody, nobody really talks in depth about linux and the whole political meme

  • The troon stuff is baphomet worship, plain and simple.

  • "There's a simple solution. Stop giving them your money."
Uhm… I'm pretty sure all these mental foundations, NGOs and companies get the majority of their money from Black Rock, global banks, governments and "philanthropists".
They couldn't care less about our money. They already have all the money they'll ever need (to destroy everything). It's all part of the plan.

  • YT redacts heavily in this thread. But this rant needs to be redone with proper examples and not from a car.
    Articles to look up:
2018-09-30: Linus Torvalds' daughter has signed the "Post-Meritocracy Manifesto" (a manifesto written by the most icecream person that can be)
2018-09-29: And Then They Came for Somebody Who Actually Gets Things Done: Linus Torvalds
2018-09-26: Linus Torvalds has retreated from the Linux kernel development team

  • The thing about rust is that it has a reputation for memory safety, at least compared to C.

Me? I’d rather write in assembly.

  • Hard disagree about Rust in the Linux Kernel. Maybe I'm one of the few who develop mainly in Rust, but I'm a Libertarian, and all FLOSS and Open Source projects should be meritocracies. If I submit a shitty patch or a god-awful PR, I expect to be ridiculed in public all in the open until I write better code and fix the patch or PR.

  • Kinda funny linux in 2024 is much worse than windows now. I hate it so much. Even putting $1000 to buy Microsoft stock provides more return.

  • Dude on that laptop… Switch to cachyOS and use KDE plasma there your problems are solved. Stop using old shitty out of date distribution like mint.

Your feature problems like no thumbnail previews is just due to using out of date old packages in bad linux distributions.

  • Ooow! You have opened my eyes to this! Now I see, how things are done and why we are in so much trouble!

  • I really hate the practise of re-donating donated funds to random shit. That's like stealing IMO. I witnessed that a lot with union funds.

  • DeEnshitifyOS is the future.
Jokes aside, there is way too many people, if you can even call them people, who are too busy trying to solve an unsolvable(for them)equation of "What Is A Woman?" Instead of working, putting resources into open source devlopment, they try to change the world, fight the planet Earth herself, and the climate. Seems the open source software space trully is filled with grifters and inferiority complex connoisseurs.

  • I'm all for it!

I wonder if you could set-up a crowdfund, to see if the money is there.

"Give Send Go" is , I believe, non-idoelogical, and 'SubscribeStar": they won't screw you the moment you look like you are going to succeed, unlike a "GoFundMe", but you likely have even better ideas there.

I believe you can refund donations, or give thm to a charity of your choice, if the thing doesn't take off.

  • I don't think proprietary solutions are the solutions. FOSS has proven itself as a great model. Actually you can use the power of FOSS against those purple and blue haired lunatics. Let's say GNOME turns into rainbow theming by default – you can simply fork the project, remove the crap and publish it as a new project – that is pure GNOME, since it's GPL licensed. See, that's the power of FOSS and no ideological disputes or whatever can take that away. It's a philosophy put into good practice. Not ideal, but much better than proprietary solutions, where if something goes wrong – it all goes to the trash, you can't do anything about it.
And the problem is not the woke ideology itself. It is only a cover flag. The real problem is the alphabet letters agencies, who are hiding behind. They are the scary ones. Because wokies can't turn you into a wokie, but the agencies can and will create the ultimate digital prison for all of us and that will affect (it already is) our lives, that is what matters.
The last published agenda of the GNOME foundation includes goals, like establishing relations with governments. WTF? Why, for what purposes? I think we know. They want to make sure we ALL or at least as many as possible are in the digital prison and not outside of it.

  • I think Ike's "sin" was even more trivial; He was religious, a Catholic, I think, and he opposed gay marriage.

  • Quite a bit of on-the-money commentary here, but I think you're a little in the dark in one respect; Big Tech is FAR worse than the Linux Kooks, because BT have more power AND USE IT.

A while back now, Google openly boasted that THEY determine the outcome in over 20% of the world's elections, simply by manipulating search results just before the election takes place.

A nototrious example was the time a search on election eve for "Republican Party" turned up "NAZI Party" at the top of the results page!

This was of course, laughably dismissed as an accident, as all similar occurrences always are.

A internal motivational video of Google's was recently leaked by an disquieted employee, and at the end was displayed Google's new company slogan: "Re-ordering mankind according to company values".

When Linux can wield power anything remotely like Google can, I might begin to agree with you that Linux is "far worse" than Big Tech.

  • The hive mind is winning – Resistance is Futile – your individuality and uniqueness will be repurposed to serve our Blue and Purple haired agenda

  • Sadly, 'nerd' has become one of those words that its definition has become so all-encompassing that it no longer has any meaning any more. To me, that point was reached with popular sports broadcasters were calling themselves 'sports nerds.' Understanding the history between nerds and jocks, a 'sports nerd' is kind of an oxymoron, to say the least.

  • We all know Mozilla is garbage now. I still think FireFox is better than Google Chrome.

The same situation is being played out with gaming. Shovelware has always existed, but now they’re allowed to insert their political garbage into it. AAA, midware, indies, doesn’t matter. It’s why I still hold onto my old games. The only new console I’ve bothered getting is the Steamdeck.

Just stick to older products. If you have to stick to a newer product then do some actual research on it.

  • as well as on projects that do NOT continue after a year or so…

    why ?

developers need to make a living…
