Install Need For Speed Most Wanted on Ubuntu with PlayOnLinux
Guide to installing Need For Speed Most Wanted on Ubuntu, using PlayOnLinux (Wine 1.5.30).
This video tutorial is done in Ubuntu 13.04, but it will work in Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 as well. It should work in the future as well, as long as PlayOnLinux is available for future Ubuntu versions. This video was requested.
To install Need For Speed Most Wanted on Ubuntu using PlayOnLinux, we are going to require a torrented version of the game (since the normal installer is buggy and doesn’t really work in Wine). Make sure you have the latest version of Wine (at the time of recording, it was 1.5.30). We will also be using UniWS later on to let NFS MW use higher resolutions than just 1280×1024.
Steps:
1. Install PlayOnLinux 4.1.8 or newer.
2. Install Wine 1.5.30 (or newer) into POL.
3. Download NFS MW 2005 (link below)
4. Setup Wine to use VCRun 2005, DirectX9 and VBRun6.
4. Install NFS MW 2005 inside PlayOnLinux using Wine 1.5.30.
5. Paste Uniws.exe and patches.ini into the same prefix as NFS MW.
6. Set NFS MW’s in-game resolution to 640×480 and then exit.
7. Rename NFS’s speed.exe to speed2.exe (this is temporary)
8. Run Uniws and patch the game using the NFSU2 preset.
9. Rename NFS’s speed2.exe BACK to speed.exe
10. Run the game and enjoy!
Need For Speed Most Wanted is an old game from 2005, but it’s still one of the best lan racing games out there that withstands the passing of time. You can get it working in Ubuntu using this guide. It’s relatively heavy on graphics, so older systems should be able to play this as well but how well will differ depending on the system and the drivers.
I hope this video helps you get Need For Speed Most Wanted up and running on your system.
NOTE: Changing any graphical settings in the options part of the game will make the game crash. That’s ok though, as the game will remember the settings on the next time it starts up.

P.S: Sorry guys, I have to remove the link. However, a quick Google search using the following torrent name will yield the necessary results. The torrent name is:
Need for Speed Most Wanted 1.3 (Black Edition) (2005)
NOTE: I don’t condone piracy, but in this case where the game is old and the publisher is not actively selling it globally I don’t feel it’s wrong. If you can buy it, do so! If you’ve bought it, then it is your freedom to use your purchased copy or the torrent one (since the torrent one provides the updates and fixes, whereas the retail copy doesn’t). Since I don’t own it, I have not kept it on my computer.
