Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) – 5 : Network Management Systems
When a network consisted of one, five or even 10 different devices, it was pretty easy to manage and monitor the network. However, when networks started to include 50, 100 or 1,000 different devices, all requiring configuration, monitoring, upgrading, and troubleshooting things started to get out of control. As the number of devices in networks increased, it quickly became clear that physically going from device to device for management was not going to work.
In the early days of network development, each equipment manufacturer developed their own software to manage their own equipment. Imagine you had equipment from 10 different companies, and you needed 10 different software packages to control it. Network managers started to demand a better way to manage their network.
Network managers needed a standard protocol that could manage all their equipment. In response to that need, a new protocol was developed, called the Simple Network Management Protocol, or SNMP.
