Ultrasound use has rapidly expanded throughout inpatient and outpatient settings to a wide range of procedures and to diverse groups of patients. This expansion means that a broad spectrum of clinical staff are involved in reprocessing with varying levels of training and knowledge relating to best practice.
Sonographers and infection preventionists (IPs) need to work together to ensure that reprocessing is conducted appropriately. This is particularly relevant in light of recent outbreaks involving reusable semi-critical medical devices. These medical devices minimally require high level disinfection and are now in the spotlight for accreditation bodies and regulators.
This ‘On Demand’ video presents the lastest results of the first large scale USA survey of IPs on ultrasound probe reprocessing practice. Key findings, areas for improvement and proposed solutions will be discussed, including strategies for sonographers and IPs to ensure patient safety.
