Workspaces on Ubuntu 20.04 (Unity)

Often times we have multiple projects going on at the same time and it’s nice to be able to keep things separate. Workspaces are a great way to organize things into logical grouping.

This video covers:
– Customizing workspace settings using Unity Tweak Tool
– Shortcuts for navigating workspaces and moving dialogs around
– Removing the icon from the launcher
– Updating number of rows and columns allowed

To remove just the icon from the launcher menu but keep workspaces enabled: https://askubuntu.com/questions/38789/how-do-i-add-and-remove-the-workspace-switcher-launcher-from-the-unity-launcher

    the keybinding became super+[shift]+page up/down

  • How do you make those Ubuntu Unity's virtual work like Windows 10 virtual workspaces, where you can open up MS Word in two virtual workspaces at the same time? I love using Ubuntu 20.04, just not impressed with how the virtual workspaces work on there like Windows 10 is all.

  • ubuntu 20.04 is very bad and stupid for the workspaces. it used to be so good – that I could just keep things separate – now its a mess. I don't want to mix windows of different workspaces. Why can't I get that working 🙁

  • Thank for making this video.
    Very helpful.

But i have one doubt :
How to remove small preview shown when switching between workspaces?

  • Can you assign one virtual desktop or workspace to one monitor and when you toggle between different workspace on another monitor it will not toggle that assigned workspace in that other monitor? just like how mac handles it

  • Great video it was very helpful. I would like to use the 2×2 quad display to monitor four devices on my home network. I have set up a Firefox window for each one of my devices and I have then assigned each to a workspace window. Question though – is there a way to have all four display workspaces illuminated at the same level? Currently, three of the workspaces are 50% darker than the highlighted workspace. Thanks, Steve

  • To solve the problem with switching vertical workspaces, you have to set up the shortcuts for your keyboard: open System Settings. Go to keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Navigation. Here you can setup the shortcuts you want to "Switch to workspace above" and to "Switch to workspace below".

  • Doesn't work for me. I had troubles starting the Ubuntu Tweak Tool – after the installation I couldn't find it in dash, I tried to start it over the terminal, but and error message told me I had to install "sudo apt-get install unity-lens-files" and "sudo apt-get install unity-lens-applications". I did this, started the tool, switched on the worspace switcher and just nothing happens 🙁

  • This is the only video that works. I wish I could give you a million likes man.
