Gnome Boxes | Initial Setup and Configuration | Ubuntu 18.04

This is the initial setup and configuration of gnome boxes in an Ubuntu 18.04. This is a great piece of virtualization software and is seemless to use and install. In this video, I go over the initial Setup and then the basic configuration of Gnome boxes. This overview I go over the pros and cons of Gnome Boxes and this will be the first part in a series of Videos going over Gnome Boxes.

What it is and how gnome boxes work

Installation Command:
sudo apt install gnome-boxes qemu-kvm libvirt-bin

Add User to kvm:
sudo usermod -a -G kvm $USER

Allow users in kvm group to start VMs:
sudo sed -i -e ‘s/#group = “root”/group=kvm/g’ /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf

  • I couldn't figure out why my version of boxes wasn't working, and landed here. Turns out the version I installed first was a snap package on Ubuntu. That's why it wasn't working. Uninstalled that, installed the version that was off the distro source instead (because they list the snap pkg first and you have to change it to install from the distro catalog), and it was flawless.

  • I'm running Manjaro and just installed Boxes through the software centre. It was easy to install through the software centre and no command lines. I'm finding Boxes so much simpler to create virtual machines than other VM's like Virtual Box.

  • On Debian 10.9:
"E: Package 'libvirt-bin' has no installation candidate"
    so…
    sudo apt install gnome-boxes qemu-kvm libvirt-clients libvirt-daemon-system virtinst

  • I would really appreciate you brother, if you could help me about this real problem. I am a new in bug bounty hunting zone n for this I need to use both Linux n Windows 10 because some Windows based softwares don't work at all in Linux like Acunetix Net Sparker etc…because they need Dot Net Repositories Windows DLLs Registry registration etc…all typical Dot Net platform REQUIREMENTS…Inshort I wanna use Linux n Windows on same single pc on same single screen… I tried Oracle Vmware Gnome Boxes but all SUCKS as they Consume too much RAM CPU resources….

Yes in MacOs we have parallel OS software to run linux Windows simultaneously on MacOs on the same pc on same screen with minimum RAM CPU resources….Hope I made my question very clear to get REAL Solution…

Love n Respect for you brothers

  • You would be a legend if you made the text bigger

  • Gnome Boxes is in the Software Manager ! its easy to click install it !!!

  • E: Package 'libvirt-bin' has no installation candidate
    HELP

  • Interesting,it is android x86 compatible and have Virgl acceleration. This will be good for gaming on Linux.

  • I hab a question b0ss
I use boxes but the display resolution is always 640*480 , how do i change it and set the aspect ratio to 16:9?

  • Does not work on Mint 19.3 Cinnamon. Disapointment. Tried a lot, however, VirtualBox at least works.

  • I installed windows 10 on endless os from gnome boxes and I cânt play games on it because it lags like a 90 years old computer, any solutions pls?

  • Package libvirt-bin is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

    I got this error

  • Watching this video, I have come to understand why some users might be afraid of command line. Some commands are just so overly convoluted and incomprehensible. For instance: amongst the commands in this video, there is a sed command, which I found to not only be unnecessary, but also error-prone; you could have just open an editor to edit /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf instead.

  • Why apt doesn't install automatically the dipendencies? 🤔

  • hi, chris, my operating system is Fedora 25 and i have installed gnome boxes successfully, i am connecting to a virtual machine mininet, can you tell me how do i mount a usb device in virtual machine (mount /dev/sdb1 mycreatedfolder won't work). I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks.

  • Is the native Ubuntu repo version better to use than the Flatpak? Flatpak is a much lager file so just want to get your opinion.

  • plz let me know from how i can able to set network adapter setting as bridge network in gnome box

  • This is fucking bullshit if you ask me, you shouldnt have to add the dependencies needed for the package or add yourself to groups and crap after an install. Ubuntu 18.04 has been a hot mess and I'm seriously thinking about switching to Fedora, I'm getting sick of it. Everything is a pain in the ass and hacked together, trash.

  • HELP! Libvirt-bin missing. Any one have the code to get the repository?

I'm a newbie and as good as linux is at getting better at helping newbies. It is still too technical for the average windows user. I spent over 6 hours trying to find something telling me how to do it and lucked out.

Telling me to go look at the help page in Ubuntu, isn't exactly helpful when for someone not technical it is too vague in what I exactly have to do. I have no clue what I'm doing. I need to be shown step for step or I can't do it. Been told go look over there and then have to figure out what is needed there and how to get it, just doesn't work 🙁

Tried virtual box instead, which I at least could launch, but there too ran into issues of not been able to get it to see my usb or anything on my home network, so couldn't connect to my scanner/printer. Gave up on that after 4 hours of fighting with it.

Pop OS solved the issue of getting my graphics card to work. But now this is my last hurdal to ditch windows as my main pc. And duel booting just to use the scanner is a major pain in the neck. But I need the ablity to change my settings and my printer/scanner is too old even for linux.

  • Box setup has failed

    Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial)

  • Hola Chris

Exelente Video

  • I was always stopping at step 3. Time to learn sed 🙂

  • I have a problem here
    worldstream@worldstream-All-Series:~$ sudo apt install gnome-boxes qemu-kvm libvirt-bin
    Reading package lists… Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information… Done

  • I just ran the commands provided on KDE Neon; Boxes installed and runs just fine.

  • Curious what you think of the current politics going on with AMD and Intel. It's almost looking like part of the world is planning to leap to ARM architecture asap. It turns political really quick when one has to decide which political model is ultimately supplying your core technology. AMD?><Intel?><ARM? Urgh!

  • I wonder if flatpak Gnome Boxes will work OOTB.
    flatpak install flathub org.gnome.Boxes

  • Very Helpful can't wait to see your next video keeps the good work up!
