Pop OS COSMIC Desktop Is Close But Still So Far!!

It’s been about 7 months since I last checked in on the COSMIC Desktop project and since then a ton of work has been done on things like HDR, there’s a theming system, a notification center, lock and login screens and so much more, whilst I’m not going to wait for it to be done it is looking really cool.

  • Really hope they get a slide show for background displays out of the box.
Having to get gnome extentions just to have a rotating background display is annoying.

  • Tbh as much as I love plasma this one look so clean and have really cool features I might actually switch!! It looks like what I'm aiming at with my plasma look anyway😅😅

  • I love stacking, it's out of the box feature on macOS, and I've been looking for such one among Linux DE's.

  • Imagine Valve and System76 working together on this.

  • wow I love this I will switch to pop os when released AWESOME

  • Ah I hope there will be a Fedora Spin on it.
I like Gnome but stuff like VR is soooo backwards…

  • Hi sir, can you tell me what you use to scroll up/down using this little circle with arrows? 4:50 in this video.
    Thanks for a great video!

  • Nice to see tab/stack support! I love that in Sway/i3 but it hasn’t caught on in many other DE/WMs

  • Honestly I don't really care about all this customization stuff. I don't need to be able to color everything like a rainbow beyond just having a dark mode. I don't really change the color setting on my keyboard either. I just want it to be functional and work with all the apps I use without the themes breaking anything. I want it to be solid and functional. I use it to do other things, not to play around with a bunch of settings to make things look different. It's doing its job if it stays out of my way and I don't even notice it.

  • I’m waiting for it, as I’m a user of Pop!_OS because I own a System76 laptop and it is the only setup that supports all of the features of the laptop seamlessly. The new tiling mode is much closer to just using a tiling window manager, even supporting individual monitor switching. They now have the freedom to make a desktop environment that developers might want to use and make it easier for them to support.

  • Cosmic Desktop is really refreshing and I'm looking forward to it! Maybe it will me make switching back from macOS to Linux.

  • I'm a KDE fangirl, and as such have been excitedly awaiting Plasma 6.
But COSMIC is sure looking interesting! I'm definitely gonna try it out!
It would obviously take a lot to make me ditch Plasma, but I might use it on a side computer.

  • At first I was wanting it to be the default DE in the 24.04 release but now that seems too close and I hope it misses that deadline so people don't hate on it being incomplete.

  • There being two exclamation marks made me read Far!! as Fart!

  • I was initially weirded out by some of the design decisions, but Cosmic is shaping up to look really good. I’ll probably give it a try soon, but I’m really hoping that the folders support the system accent colors like KDE Plasma’s default themes.

The new applets system seems like KDE Plasma in a lot of ways, which is nice.

  • I'm actually really excited for this. I don't know yet if it actually will be something for me, but I have been interested in this blend of the conveniences of a DE and proper tiling support. Tiling is way more important to me than anything else so I do actually use a tiling window manager right now.

There are some options for tiling, like the gnome and kde extensions, but they honestly feel very hacky and often don't quite work as I'd expect them to. So hopefully Cosmic manages to meet my expectations.

  • I've been using PopOS for about a year now and I love it. I've moved all my computers over to it. I can't wait for this new environment. It looks really cool.

  • If Wayland cannot be used well, why is its adoption compulsive?
