@jawoodle, There's a parking garage in your apartment building.
I like the water tower for an early horde base. Don't listen to the other people. It's a good spot. Build on top of the tower with some bars and hatches, You'll be fine.
I'm playing the End Z mod right now, I have two NPC"s standing in my horde base waiting. See if you can find another friend to help disrupt your adventures, 🙂

Observations from my playthrough: This mod forces you to slow down a lot, progression takes way longer. The lifestyle of the mod changes the value of perks drastically. Food is a lot harder to get because of the curses, and I'm actually excited to find food in loot!
Books are way harder to get overall (slower progression), raiding is slowed by the snow, I find myself choosing perks that speed up raiding instead of raw damage…..The NPC's are no bad at all – although I haven't run into armed bandits yet. Very hard, very atmospheric…..I'm loving this!
I had to play this myself after watching Woodle. The 2nd night of the mod, a freaking snowman beat his way into the trader I was staying with and nearly murdered me! This with a shark hanging around. It was all I could do to run around the trader, slamming doors and sneaking to get away from it.
This was on night 2!!! I had a level 2 bone knife and a pipe shotgun for gods sake!
This is good stuff. 7 days needs more stuff like this!

In all his efforts to keep the new Mustache away from Jen, I think Woodle himself has fallen in love with the Mustache on Bazza
btw it is possible to get the stuff from the old base by first making the boundaries of the land claim pretty small and put as close as possible, then change the area to become larger, it would then overlap the trader compound area without any problems and you can get the stuff out
