Azure Hybrid Use Benefit and cost savings

Microsoft’s Azure Hybrid Benefit (AHB) program allows you to use existing Windows and SQL Server licenses in Azure. While AHB (or AHUB) offers minimal benefits for SQL Server, it can provide significant cost savings, up to 90%, on Windows Server licenses in Azure.

However, AHB should not be used for certain Azure subscriptions, such as test and development subscriptions, where virtual machines are already discounted and don’t require licenses. Using AHB in those cases would result in unnecessary costs.
