How A Supreme Court Case Redefined Whiteness
In 1923, the Supreme Court revoked an Indian man’s citizenship which would go on to have devastating consequences for other Indian immigrants as well. The reason? He wasn’t white. What does this case, United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind, tell us about the larger history of race, white supremacy, and citizenship in America?
Hosted by Harini Bhat, Ph.D., In The Margins is a series that covers the history they didn’t teach in school, exploring obscure, yet captivating tales that offer unique insights into their time and place.

Every race has gone through this stuff. It was a long time ago. The same doesnt happen today and we can quit with the victim mentality. Dont look behind you only look forward. Get rich and enjoy America. America is the land of opportunities and you are in it. Many including myself wish to be American one day. You are allready american make the best of it. God bless America and its republic. Love from Canada.
As usual Punjabi wanted to make himself a white 😂. He claims Hindu Brhamin family with sikh turban 😂.
In Canada and America Sikhs hate Brahmins 😂.
👍
High caste Hindu born in punjab??? First sentence full of mistakes.
Due to caste if one should leave Hinduism:
What about the promise on which Christianity was promoted across the world that on just accepting it, one will find miracles, which should include equality, transcending all barriers and sins of the past like complexion?
Sikhs are Aryan, yes.
He's Sikh. Say he's a Sikh.
I find the person's attempt to portray himself superior to rest of the Indians just to get a citizenship very hateful. I myself am a brahmin but did not get to firsthand witness caste discrimination due to my upbringing. Caste was never the though on my mind when i met new people, though i have read extensively about caste oppression through books and documentaries. From my personal experience, the caste still prevalent in many rural areas as social evil has transformed into a white-black thing due to anti caste legislations in India constitution. On a macro scale, It is either used for marriage or vote banks by politicians. Many of my relatives (as per my understanding) that they are superior to those from lower caste but they feel resentment over the reservation of government jobs given to lower castes (similar to how western think of immigrants taking their jobs), this has created more of a factionalism with growing resentment between castes. Lower castes think that they should be compensated even more for the atrocities their ancestors suffered (while most have not personally experienced it), while upper caste feel that they have not personally discriminated against another person and still have to be treated as second class citizens by the government for opportunities.
PS: Neither i am justifying caste discrimination, nor i am trying to say it does not exist in current India. this short comment was just to give my subjective understanding of the current realities of caste as i have personally expertise in my life of 25 years. To be honest, if politicians stop dividing indians on basis of caste and reservations were strictly limited to non creamy layer or overhauled on the basis of indicators like Multi-dimensional poverty, caste system would have become mostly transparent in public life, though i can't say about personal life.
Aryan race was theory created by max Muller which was disproved by many other it is like a joke india migrated to other places instead europeans came here full detailed cuz before hinduism there Was pre- vedic religion
Bhagat Singh Thind is not a "high caste Hindu" in the Indic framework, except in America where he could have gotten away with that.
Castes appeared only with the 1870s, the British themselves defined whichever way they wanted it, just like how they defined "race", because there was no other way in which they could have justified their fantasized superiority.
And Arya/Vedic period is completely irrelevant in this, except because the white man tries to appropriate everyone else's history as his own.
He was not a Hindi. He was a Sikh.
Me personally I've seen very few white people in fact the majority of Europeans are pink, Light pink all the way to almost red !!Some cream color some really tan. So outside of a few albinos no matter what their quote race is The only real white people I've seen have been geishas, clowns, and mimes!! Outside of Japan where there seems to be an obsession to try to pass as Quote white AKA European With dyeing your hair blonde Getting your eyes quote fixed and wearing blue contacts The number one place on the planet where people still actually use skin lightening cream because of their obsession with the notion that Europeans are somehow the best looking race is in India Exclamation point let's not forget that the cast system Originally was based on skin pigmentation when you had the quote Aryans from the north the brahmanas slowly invading The original inhabitants of India With the skin pigmentation of the Tamil people of Southern India today That are actually darker than most Of us African-Americans Because we African-Americans come in all Shades like Indians From light bright and damn near white to black is the Ace of Spades but that's actually due to having also European genetics because Thomas Jefferson wasn't the only slavemaster raping his slaves But in India There's still an obsession with Light skin I mean just look at Bollywood How ridiculous!!
Thank the Civil Rights Act of 1965 for removing those quotas, you know the ones that a lot of black folks we're at the Forefront of the fight
@0:00: The opening question of the video seems odd. The person in question was Sikh, not Hindu.
The quotation marks suggest it was a quotation, but no citation is given. (The narrator merely states that it was a question posed to the U.S. Supreme Court.) In the future, please cite quotations.
They were called Indians, not South Asians back in 2013
Excellent video
is this CRT or being Woke? – I believe learning this 12 min story has made me a better citizen…
Why would any South Asian want to move to the United States?
Races are a man- made idea, not based on scientific facts.
It’s funny how we Indians today are most successful group in USA . Only Jews rivals Indian ln USA
Pure Ignorance. Calling a Sikh a Hindu
He's Sikh, not a Hindu, and thus Sikhism claims denial of Casteism, so there's no high or low caste. But on the basis, "looks", he's definitely on the much "whiter" side. (Not including "Aryanisayion" and narrative bof these sorts).
I heard you say whiteness has a definition according to the courts. I heard that. I listened to the whole thing and all your points are well received, but that one point makes those non-white white nationalists maybe a bit deluded.
Perhaps you can do a video on defining whiteness. That might be both interesting and provocative.
Do ur research first he’s not high cast Hindu, He’s From Punjab and He’s Sikhs who fought in WW1 and WW2 but Sikhs was Ok to fight in WW2 but not Good enough to live in USA 🇺🇸 or Canada 🇨🇦
Retconning Indians (largest country population in the world, 1.4 billion) as minority "Asians" is problematic at best. This definition of Asians as being from Asia would also include white Russians living in continental Asia. Indians not "Asians" are now the number 2 population immigrating to the U.S., soon to become number one as India offloads it overpopulation. By this definition, generational whites born in Africa are "Africans," and should be afforded minority status when entering the U.S..
In deference to Justice Potter Stewart, I know an "Asian" when I see one.
Think for a second. Somebody had to claim that they belong to a race to access equal privileges. As a proof, they pointed to their high caste in India. Makes me want to puke. Also tells us how hard European origin people made it for others to have dignity. Today we downplay it because it is no longer strongly prevalent, but it secretly lingers everywhere (both caste in India, race in European societies). The main reason BBC only puts negative coverage of India is to create a poor image of India so that they can continue justifying racism. Cheap trick but seems to work always.
About 16 percent of the worlds population are white or can pass as white. The concept of white has changed over over time. Ben Franklin didn't believe Germans were white because they were "dark". At one time Americans didn't consider people from Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and the Middle East real whites. I don't care about the color of your skin. Are you a good American? If an immigrant, did you come into the country the legal way my grand parents did? Do you obey the law? Will you defend the Constitution?
He was brown of course they wouldn't think he was white
what peoples lived from iran down to the promised land over from top to bottom ?

Non-Whites forever obsessed with us😂 Guys, just try to emulate our success; Stop wasting time being jealous of us.
What mesmerizes me about humans is how they support the same prosecution they experienced when its happeneing to others.
Indians were discriminated against and on the basis of race and religion. Today Indians support the discrimination of Muslims in America.
Is white ? Or pink?
ya know, he actually is correct. whiteness is based on caste. this guy came from the top of his caste. he not trying to start at the bottom based of this fake demonic system of 'whiteness'
He wouldn’t be a Hindu, Singh thind is a Sikh name.
Lol, 'invadind Hindu hordes' in late 1910. Racists ditn't have no chill then, nor do they have any now.
I had an Indian person argue with me that they were white and I was like no you’re not, you’re INDIAN. You’re not European. I think what makes it insane to me is she thought she was better because she classified herself as “white”. Just mind blowing to me
Might be white in India, but certainly not white anywhere else. I know how an Indian looks like a mile away.
Wow, at 6:45-ish, "hey you should let me in because I'm just as racist/classist as you are"
India consistently ranks as the most racist country in the world.
i learned a lot about "White" issues in US History. Thank you!
He is sikh not hindu you hindus are the corrupt people of the world corruption is in the hindus dna but sikhs are greet and true people
How did someone from a rural village hear about the USA in 1920 and decide to immigrate!! That takes a lot of courage.
He knew that if he could claim he was
"White", he could obtain many benefits.
Vivek Ramaswampy has the audacity to be racist and AMERICA didn't even accept them at one point.
Black people paved the way during the Civil Rights Protests and movement.
Vote 🗳
"Whiteness" are phenotypes associated with albinism. All human races evolved from a dark skinned African woman scientifically known as Mitochondrial Eve.
No mention of progress? The U.S. is now one of the most accepting, diverse countries in the world.
