Windows Server versions and editions

Don’t let the confusion between software versions and editions fool you. Not even Google seems to have it right.

Versions are simply numerical identifiers like 2022 or 2019. Editions, on the other hand, define the scope of features and corresponding prices, such as Standard, Datacenter, or Essentials.

So, when someone asks about the edition of your Windows Server machine, the answer isn’t “2022.” That’s the version, not the edition. The correct response is Datacenter, Standard, or Essentials.

Remember, versions are numbers, editions are packages. Editions affect your budget, not versions.
