Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) | CISSP |
Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) is a feature in Microsoft Windows operating systems for automatically assigning a unique IP address to a computer’s network interface when it fails to acquire a static IP address from a DHCP server. Key aspects include:
IP Range: APIPA assigns an IP address from a designated range (169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.254).
Subnet Mask: Typically uses a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0.
No Internet Access: Devices with APIPA addresses cannot communicate outside their local subnet and typically cannot access the internet.
Self-assignment: The operating system automatically assigns the APIPA address when DHCP is unavailable.
Temporary Solution: Intended as a temporary measure to allow local network operations until the DHCP issue is resolved.
APIPA is useful for small networks but limited since it doesn’t support routing to other networks or internet connectivity.
