Best Home Server in 2022 for Virtualization and Containers

Are you looking at buying or building new hardware for your home lab enviroment? Are you looking for the best home server, best docker container server, or best virtualization server to fit your use case? I have been using Supermicro Edge/IoT servers in my home lab since the beginning as they have a great mix of features, functionality, and capabilities for my needs. I recently added a Supermicro E300-9D-8CN8TP server to my fleet. Take a look at the video as I describe the new server, show the inside of the server, hardware, add-on cards, RAM, and discuss networking.

  • I liked the video, thank you very much for sharing. However, I personally think there is some room for improvement in this video. the first and most important improvement is for a video presenting a server home lab server the price/cost factor should be discussed or at least mentioned in the video. But very good video thank you!

  • I thought the purpose for a home lab was to install physical nodes on baremetal and have kubernetes make the hardware redundant. Please excuse me for my ignorance. Also when you say 'VM', is this an instance created by docker or are you talking about a Virtual Machine created with HyperV and etc? I don't understand the advantages, disadvantages.. Please be generous with your reply I'm a noob.

  • Very impressive, are you interested to review our NEW version with i3-N305 CPU and 32GB LPDDR RAM with 3*2.5G+2*10G or 2*25G SFP+?

  • Please learn how to close those chassis covers ……..

  • awe man… i was super interested until you mentioned there's some silly software licensing for the mgmt port. ugh….

  • I've been using ARM for my home lab. I've been thinking about using Proxmox for ARM, but I'm not sure how good it will run. I'm using 3 of the Rock chip 8 core variant with 16GB of RAM.

  • I think he really really really likes supermicro

  • I purchased older enterprise Servers from SavemyServer so I am running 2 dell poweredge R710 and R720

  • Hello, just subscribed. Is there a USA source you recommend for these little supermicros? How home use, I have been looking at poweredge 620s but don’t want a little jet engine heat source in my basement stairwell rack sucking 250-300 watts so I can run some vm’s.

  • Fantastic, just something I was looking for over last 2 days.

  • Jasnýý, pecko za petačtyřicet tisíc jako domácí server, proč ne.

  • I'm looking at getting the E300-9D. Can you tell me, How big are you're capacity M2 drives that you have in the card? Also, about how much was that card?

Finally why do you have an SSD mounted as well? How big is that?

I'm building a proper rack with a lot of input from your channel.

  • home server for 2k$ – thank you

  • Nice review!! Did you install any additional drivers for vSphere with this motherboard?

  • I'm glad some folk are rich , can understand if you do it for a living !

  • Yes but … For the money this server costs I get 3 intel NUCS and do a proxmox cluster for availability and much more
