Building an Ubuntu PC for my mother with Corsair 4000X and Gigabyte B550

My mother uses Ubuntu, because l33t. Been feeling like doing some new PC builds lately and just so happened my mother needed an upgrade around the time of her birthday, so I decided to build her one.

Controlling RGB and fan speeds from Ubuntu is tricky, but thankfully the Corsair controller has on board memory, so I was able to load up the Corsair iCUE software in a virtual machine and set it up, then just boot as normal. It remembers the settings, even without the virtual machine or software running.

So if you’re an Ubuntu/Linux user, you can get your hardware setup if you’re using Corsair! Probably other brands too but haven’t tested those.

PARTS LIST

Case: Corsair iCUE 4000X RGB Mid Tower
PSU: Corsair RM550x 80 Plus Gold
RAM: Corsair Vegeance RGB RT 16gb DDR 3200MHz
Mother Board: Gigabyte B550 Vision D-P
CPU: Ryzen 3300X
Cooler: iCUE H100i Elite Capellix
GPU: Aorus RX580
SSD: Samsung 1TB

Special thanks to Corsair for helping out with the build! Not actually “sponsored”, but they did supply some parts that I requested.

  • Look, I did a Ryzen build! Enjoy it, because the next build is Mini ITX and Intel 😂

Update: Forgot to mention, now that she has a nice new PC, she's actually started gaming. I installed Quake Champions, but apparently that was a little too much. Baby steps, she'll start with the easier games, work up to being pro later.

  • i never expected any linux-related content from rocket jump ninja. this is cool!

  • Ubuntu, well she has PC skills or your want to torment her XD

  • I know this is kinda late to say, but Happy Birthday Mother Jump Ninja and Merry Christmas.

  • Day 1 of commenting on every video you post to bug you to make an mz1 wireless edition. I can't use any other mouse now, so I need wireless. Also, the scroll wheel needs a much more grippy, aggressive texture because the current groove texture makes your finger slip occasionally when scrolling. The scroll click could be slightly easier to actuate as well. Besides that, it's perfect, hurry up and take my money!!!

  • She can do some serious programming with that OS haha

  • did the ps5 looking wifi thing come with the motherboard?

  • Merry christmas Zy and MamaZy, I hope the new channel direction has been treating you well!

  • rocket's mom – My pc broke I need a good simple lapto-
Rocket – Hands over a pc which costs more than my life

  • wow your mom knows how to use Ubuntu? Damn i wasn't expecting that.

  • The cooler mount design depends on the product. Some like noctua uses the non stock AMD design where you remove the black parts

  • That's actually pretty nice! That looks awesome!

  • Why would you do that to your mother, though? Let her have windows, bro.

  • Not gonna lie you missed the perfect opportunity to make a mini itx system with minimal looks and call it the mini-mum build XD

  • we dont care about the build …… but your mum uses ubuntu ? now thats a vid make it happen

  • Wait til the Linux nerds find out you put Ubuntu on this thing lol

  • Alternatively you can use liquidctl to control the rgb and the liquid cooler settings using the terminal.

  • Black builds with dark tempered glass and rgb are the cleanest rigs

  • for real tho, companies need to make their software available for linux as well and/or contribute to openRGB, at this point in time it should be unnacceptable to have to learn how to make a VM with passthrough just to be able to control RGB lighting

  • You should’ve included the MZ1 Zy’s rail in the gift. It boosts your fps by like 1000. It’s essential for any gaming PC.

  • An Ubuntu PC … your mom got a good taste 😀

  • hoppe your mum enjoys being kept up all night due to the RGB's! the perfect holiday gift

  • Will the mz1 continue to be sold in the future? I main this now so I'm worried that somewhere down the line I can't buy one.
