CCNA 200 – 301 – Lesson – 34: Wide Area Network (WAN)

Now, we will be learning in detail about Wide Area Network; let’s begin –

What is WAN?
Wide Area Networks span a huge geographical area through telephone lines, fiber optic cables, and satellite links and are not limited to a single location and the Internet is one of the biggest WANs in the world.
Example: Let’s say I have an office in Delhi, Gurgaon, Chennai, and Mumbai. I want to connect all these offices, So, I need a network that will help me connect all these offices together so that network is called WAN.

Different types of WAN connections
Dedicated Leased Lines: A Leased Line is a dedicated bandwidth type connection. It is used to provide both types of services; it can provide you with the Internet and point-to-point connectivity between two sites. Data can flow through this dedicated line at a fixed bandwidth from one point to another.

Internet: Here, the internet connection will be provided using a DSL cable (Digital Subscriber Line) which is also called the telephone cable network.
Switched: These switched technologies are used just to connect two sites; they will not provide internet service. It is categorized into two parts, i.e. Circuit-switched and Packet-switched. Here the Circuit-switched are connection-oriented and Packet-switched are connectionless. The circuit-switched networks were used to provide Voice communication and Video communication.

The packet-switched networks are consist of two technologies i.e. Frame Relay and x.25 ATM. Here the frame relay was providing the bandwidth of 1.54 Mbps-40 Mbps, whereas ATM was providing the bandwidth of 55 Mbps-155 Mbps.
Some recent WAN technologies that are used now-a-days are given below:
Leased Line (T1 or E1)
Internet (with VPN)
MPLS Links

In this session, we have discussed what WAN is, what are the different types of WAN Networks that were available and which we are using right now.
