Ceilometer, CloudKitty and Gnocchi: a dynamic and agnostic cloud monitoring and billing stack.

Special thanks to our 2020 Open Infrastructure Summit sponsors for making the event possible: Canonical (Ubuntu), Huawei, VEXXHOST, Cisco, Tencent Cloud, InMotion Hosting, Mirantis, Red Hat, Trilio, VanillaStack.io, and ZTE!

Cloud computing monitoring is a challenge, operators have to monitor different physical devices, resources, and services; data needs to be stored in a cost-efficient manner, and be promptly accessible whenever requested; and, to address business requirements new monitoring metrics might need to be created on the fly for different APIs and resources.
Moreover, cloud computing is more than virtual machines as a service. Cloud companies integrate different technologies such as OpenStack for cloud infrastructure management, Keycloak for identity federation, authentication and authorization offload, and many systems.
The Dynamic pollster sub-system of Ceilometer in combination with Gnocchi and CloudKitty go towards those challenges. By deploying this stack, one can monitor new APIs and systems on the fly, store and retrieve data in a cost-effective manner, and seamlessly integrate the monitoring and billing of services into the rating system used for OpenStack.
