Change Ubuntu 20.04-20.10 Login Screen Background | Customize GNOME Display Manager (gdm3) Wallpaper

Are you bored with the default purple background of Ubuntu login screen?. Here’s how you can change gdm background with your custom image / photo / picture / wallpaper.

To be honest, gdm3 is not my favorite display manager. I like the minimalistic design, but with just a solid purple color, it’s kinda boring for me.

I create this video because vanilla Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa – which uses GNOME 3.36 and Ubuntu 20.10 – which uses GNOME 3.38 as its default desktop environment doesn’t let you to customize it, well, at least out of the box.

Unlike KDE Plasma, there’s no setting to change GDM3 login screen background unless hacking on the the style sheet file. It was fairly straightforward to edit it if you’re running in Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.10.

In Ubuntu Focal, we have to extract the css from .gresource file, edit the content, and recompile it to make a new .gresource file.

Customizing GDM3 Login Screen Background
Thankfully, there’s a simple graphical tool made with GTK3 in C to change the GDM 3 background image of Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa that created by Thiago Silva to make things easier.

This tool won’t work with older versions of Ubuntu. It was made specifically to work with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. It also won’t work if your system is set to a custom gdm3 theme. You have to reset to the default configuration of gdm3 before using this tool.

List of Commands : https://www.linuxslaves.com/2020/10/change-ubuntu-20.04-login-screen-background.html

Dependencies
– make : builder
– gcc : compiler
– libgtk-3-dev : gtk3 library
– libpolkit-gobject-1-dev : polkit library

Tip : If you are stuck in a login loop, just reboot your computer. It should fix the issue. Since the text is white, avoid applying a light white background.

You can always revert to the default Ubuntu purple theme by clicking on the Restore button.

What’s gdm3 (GNOME Display Manager)?
GDM is Gnome’s default display manager. A display manager is a program that manages graphical display servers and handles user authentication. It controls the user sessions and manages user authentication.

The display manager starts the display server and loads the desktop environment right after you enter your username and password.

GDM (GNOME Display Manager), SDDM (Simple Desktop Display Manager), and LightDM developed by Ubuntu for Unity desktop (used by Linux Mint) are some of the popular display managers.

Login screen and lock screen are two different things. For the second thing, you can use an extension to change Ubuntu 20.04 lock screen (I haven’t tested it tho).
