Completing OpenRan: OCP Community Delivers 1st Open 4G/5G Radio Platform, Fulfilling OpenRAN’s Prom – Bijan Nowroozi, Open Compute Project Foundation
This presentation explores the transformative role of the Open Compute Project (OCP), Open RAN and Linux Foundation in reshaping 4G/5G wireless infrastructure. The OCP is working on a 4G/5G 3GPP compliant open Radio Unit with a modular, cost-effective design and a capability to enable rapid innovation to spur development of a multi-vendor supply chain. We discuss the integration of AI and its impact on radio platforms, advancing the OpenRAN concept and highlighting our experience with AI/HPC , and end to end AI/OpenRAN via open CU/DU. This presentation offers a preview of a common open platform providing an alternative to today’s proprietary ecosystem and delves into the significance of open hardware in meeting OpenRAN goals of promoting vendor neutrality, cost efficiency, and innovation in the telecom sector. We conclude by emphasizing the broader implications of open community models like the OCP and LF and others in democratizing telecom access, enhancing interoperability, and fostering sustainable and advanced development of telecom infrastructure. We close with open hardware and software, aligning with the summit’s themes of innovation, efficiency, and open networking.
