In this installment, we’re revisiting the CURSE of the best new artist. This time we’re going through the 2000’s and we’re on the first half of the decade (2000-2004). Next vid will (hopefully) be 2005-2009.

…I’m more worried about that one. No lie.

  • I definitely remember the pre-sexified version of Nelly Furtado, because I bought the record after happening to catch the "I'm Like a Bird" video on MTV2—and that was the first and last album I ever bought by her. (Post-sexified Nelly Furtada had me right from the gate like "W in TF").

  • Not gonna lie, I popped big for that sneak CKY drop. That 96 Quite Butter Beings riff is one of the greatest.

  • imo evanescence can’t be that cursed when the greatest fanfiction ever written was named after one of their songs. truly the mark of success.

  • Huge miss for debut in 99-00 is The Dillinger Escape Plan’s Calculating Infinity. Sure it would never get nominated, but you know it made waves with even Lars Ulrich was giving it nods in interviews…

  • As someone who followed Crash since around 2016, it is crazy to see him say something nice about Papa Roach…

But as someone who likes a lot of Papa Roach's music, I am happy to hear it.

  • I was wondering the whole 2001 segment why Linkin Park wasn't being mentioned since Hybrid Theory came out in 2000, but when they came up in the 2002 segment, I was like "I knew you'd make a good call nominating them since that album defined the early 00's".

And I also gave a standing ovation when Bring Me to Life started playing.

  • 13:30 Bull Shit! On How Life Is is filled with great songwriting, the production is that retro funky…but her voice is both her signature and her biggest…lets say hurdle in pop.

  • Bro I was in a whole other stage of life last time you dropped a major video I’m so happy about this lol

  • Calling arrested development a miss for winning is baffling

  • I too was a Dumb Ass 14 year old who bought Devil without a Cause. I listened to it twice then Ended up Doing a music Swap with another Class Mate (back in the day that's how we discovered music Kinda like Trading Tapes) We ended up keeping each other's CD I ended up with AEnima. Part of me still feels bad he ended up with that slop. (poor guy)Should we start a support group of people who bought Kid Rock's Music… Cause i still feel dirty about it…😂

  • Also Crash thanks for giving some love to Family Force 5 I seen them live once very energetic lol

  • The second album of Norah Jones debuted with 1 million copies and was the second best-selling album in the world in 2004.

  • I always liked Norah Jones and feel she’s faired pretty well career wise she’s still cursed once you brought up the Emo Scene in the Snubbed category. Hell even comparing her to Avril yeah she won in the wrong year. Again to be like you she isn’t cursed due to talent but due to how weird in hindsight she won this award compared to literally MCR AND THE USED BEING SNUBBED

  • Ayy i'm late but i'm finally here, after a soulcrushing day at work. Thanks, Crash, i needed this.

  • Not gonna lie. I totally forgot this video series was a thing. It was a delightful surprise to be reminded.

  • 1:03:55 I remember a lot of songs she was featured on (and possibly a few more she was uncredited on📯). All by her lonesome? Not so much.

  • Norah Jones fan here. The Fall from 2009 is her best album, harkening more to rock and blues than her previous work.

  • I see Gen Z jazz pop sensation Laufey the same way I see Norah Jones. Enjoyable to listen to but also boring. My mom loves Norah Jones

  • I’m guessing that Justin and Beyonce weren’t nominated cause they were already well known and getting to number 1 on the charts for years before they went solo so to the Grammys they didn’t count

  • your takes on rnb and soul astound me tbh. jill scott is a big deal i loveeee her, n how on earth do u not remember ashanti that’s crazyyyy.

  • 1:27:09 The funniest thing is that I discovered the song earlier this year in a listening session.

You've indeed cooked well. Don't forget the walkies for your boy.

Papa Roach made the Ram Ranch rift, what the f- 1:38:22 [HAZE JUMPSCARE].

[MAROON 5 BOMB INCOMING FOR THE NEXT VIDEO]

  • Man, you do good research, but 11 years on YouTube and you still have peaking audio?! How

  • Breaking Benjamin's last 2 albums haven't been their best but I will die on the hill of the original line up era having banger after banger.

And I've never personally seen Evanescence as numetal but more symphonic like Within Temptation and Nightwish.

Hell, the rapping on Bring Me To Life was 100% a label thing that Amy fought tooth and nail against hence why they eventually removed it from live performances.

  • Also Porcupine Tree's Stupid Dream should have gotten love! Sure its not a debut but it was the first album they had made a dent Stateside with so it could have at least been worthy of a Grammy but fuck no its Kid Rock for shame!😢

  • Man, wait until we get to 2004/05 and who won and who got snubbed…

(And this is from someone who loved that winners 'first' album…)

  • 37:44 i did guess 1989, but not because i ever heard of her, you literally showed wiki page at the start of the video to demonstrate how early some of them debuted, it wasnt hard to guess that it was about her

  • Hm. It feels like there's a big blindspot for R&B in your videos. The Jill Scott, India Arie and Ashanti comments kind of bear this out.

2001-02 was a big year for Ashanti. She ended up with 3 songs in the top 10 at the same time(damn near unheard of before streaming) and her album sold gangbusters. Ashanti was so huge that when Beyoncé released her solo debut in 03', a critic famously named his review "Solo Beyoncé: She's No Ashanti".

    Great videos otherwise.

  • – Hybrid Theory was absolutely a cultural reset, on the level of Nevermind imho.
    – I maintain that Michelle Branch was most interesting when she was making country music.
    – I actually have heard that Katy Hudson album and believe it or not it's not bad? Kind of Fiona Apple vibes iirc, and the lyrics aren't too cringeworthy by CCM standards

  • love ya Crash, i've been watching for I think 7 years now, and it always makes my day whenever you drop a new vid, worth the wait every single time

  • Crash and I are the same age, so I was also there for the debut of Linkin Park and part of their target audience. Some of you might hate me for saying this, but in all honesty, I felt like I was the only Millennial alive who did not connect with this band. In fact I really disliked them a lot, and the bigger they got, the more convinced I became that the future would be a dystopia devoid of taste if this is what people were asking for.

I blame Linkin Park for the decades I spent in a pit of misanthropy that I've only recently barely climbed out of.

  • So glad you’re back!

I was -3 in 99, and an early 2000s baby, and I wish I could’ve been older around this time

  • I paused the video. I'm guessing by the footage, shelby lynn debuted in the late 80s. Which is insane already.

Edit: ARE YOU KIDDING? I GOT IT RIGHT?
