This one was some work! I picked up this 2003 Mercedes CL55 AMG with 4 other vehicles from a tow lot auction. From the very beginning, this car was going to be a parts car just based on its overall condition. This car had been in that tow lot since 2016 and had weeds growing around it.
As with all parts cars, we do our best to get them running including buying and programming keys, sorting out electrical and mechanical issues. This car had them all and put up a fight worse than the burned Miata from last year.
Not all quests end up as I intend and some cars are just not worth the extra effort. The goal with these cars is to verify the parts that I can sell are good. While I could do the normal compression/leakdown/borescope tests, I like to know what oil pressure and valve train sound like. There are other parts that I can also test only with the engine running. The goal isn’t always to FIX the car so I can drive it. If this car wasn’t rusty, and was in better overall condition I would absolutely be interested in fixing it but with a salvage title in its condition a parts vehicle is its best use.

I hope you enjoyed this video, there will likely be more in the future although I hope they’re a little easier, ha.
As always I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism. Catch you on the next one.

  • For those that are wondering, three of us tried to get this hood open when it first came in. We tried everything non invasive we could, pushing down, twisting, etc. The hood is a 3-400$ hood and thats why it went the direction it went. As well, this was filmed over the course of a month or so, and was easily one of the hardest to edit videos i've done. Really appreciate all of the support! It means a lot.

  • You were entertaining and interesting while offering a whole lot of good tech info. I'm glad you got it to run at the end. Thanks very much for investing your time and talent for your viewers. It is appreciated!

  • I owned two C215s and worked on all kinds of electrical gremlins. Check the Bus Connectors in the footwells left and right. No need to remove seat just put it all the way back and you can pull the carpet up. There is a huge cable canal going along there where I found many connectors corroded and that fixed many of my problems! On the passenger side theres a fat 12V line supplying the EIS & its controls. Having seen how your nuts looked on the fuse box in the passenger footwell open it to see if your prefuses are still intact. Also check rear SAM under the right rear seat cushion. It is very prone to suffer from water intrusion and can cause all kinds of malfunctions. Here in Germany even a non runner like this would sell for 5/6k easy! Try to get that beast of a M113K working again she deserves it. Parts and Spares are even cheaper in the US. If the ABC isnt completely shot it would be worth it IMO.

  • Lemme buy that engine off of you, I wanna rebuild it and drop it in my W211 E500.

  • its a German piece of over engineered shit. Take it to the recyclers.

  • I guess you didn’t hear me yelling “Let it goooo”

  • The driver side hood strut has an extra "service position " by pushing up on the hood, a little red button pops out of the lower part of the strut and the hood will stand practically vertical. Those clever Germans. Lol

  • It could be something as simple as a crank or cam sensor not working. The car needs to know if that stuff is functioning too. No cranky , no sparky.

  • Imagine buying this car new, and paying more for it than the average small home, then a few years later it's this piece of crap. Toyota Corolla people, Toyota Corolla.

  • and here i thought i was alone in finding out that Audi engineers thought it was a wonderful idea to put the ECM unit directly underneath the notoriously leaky windsheield washer fluid tank in my B6 3.0

  • I think you paid too much. It's amazing how these cars can be worth absolutely nothing but there it is. Good luck Bud

  • Thanks for sharing, I've got the flu and have been binge watching you. Uggg a car that expensive and they put the battery in the cab to gas the driver and passengers, a german innovation no doubt, pun fully intended.

  • Other than the fuel issues, the immobilizer circuit may be causing you issues, I have a CL55 myself and running that is one of the most pleasurable cars in the world. It really is too bad that it sat. You were reasonably successful considering the time. 143k miles is still young for an M113k …

  • I would have just sacrificed the grill. Since that car has no steel panels, everything on that car has value to secondary market. I'm kind of cringing seeing all that hacking with cutters and tools and prying things out of the way. Probably the least expensive part the damage, would have been the grill and that was probably your best chance of accessing the mechanism for the hood. Oh well , live and learn..

  • Subbed, these are amazingly well designed cars but quite complex. Hats off to you for finding this one and giving its guts a second life

  • Your diagnostic abilities are impressive.

  • Just watched and I was glued to phone trying to do what you was doing. I was like a moth drawn to a flame. Just couldn’t look away. Keep up the great videos. 🇺🇸✌️Mech7.3

  • My clk sat for 4 years, and it was a nightmare after. All kinds of things went out. Gas gauge, vent valves, a/c, cooling fans, radiator, belt tensioner. Water vent from the hood clogged water came in. Just be aware it’s going to have more problems. Your suspension is cooked that’s why it’s on the ground.
