The Dell PowerEdge R740xd server operates on DDR4 memory. There are a total of 24 DIMM slots. Now onto memory channels. The white slots are the start of a memory channel while the black slots are the end of the channel. Module speed options include 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s, and 2666MT/s, 2933MT/s. Technically speaking you can install 3200MHz (so long as you have a 2nd generation XEON Scalable processor) but these modules will clock down to operate at 2933MHz. It is important to note that the CPU that you have installed will determine that fastest speed that your modules will run at. The fastest speed for 1st Generation Scalable CPUs is 2666MT/s. The fastest speed 2nd Generation Scalable CPUs is 2933MT/s. Module capacity options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. 128GB can only be used if the modules are Load Reduced memory modules. The R740xd accepts two types of RAM: ECC Registered (RDIMM), and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). With RDIMMs, you can achieve 1.5TB with a configuration of 24x64GB. With LRDIMMs, you can reach 3TB with 24x128GB.
