DHCP Operations || DORA Process || DHCP 3

This content describes the first-time process of obtaining IP address configurations from a DHCP Server by a DHCP Client.

When DHCP is enabled on a client computer for the first time, it enters a DHCP Initializing state and begins to broadcast a DHCPDiscover message. This is done to find active DHCP servers on the link. As a broadcast message, it is sent to the destination IP address 255.255.255.255 for local broadcasts, and the all-F’s destination MAC address. As this client does not yet have an IP address, it uses the source IP address 0.0.0.0 and the source MAC is the MAC address of the interface sending the DHCPDISCOVER message.
