We’ve all seen the buttons for Shut down and Restart in Windows. But have you ever wondered what is the difference between a “shut down” and a “restart”? Or why a Windows PC boots up really fast from a shutdown but takes longer after a restart? I’ll tell you why in this video.

  • 1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

    2 Peter 1:-9

    King James Version

    1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

    2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

    3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

    4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

    5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

    6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

    7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

    8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

  • ALWAYS Shut Down (or hibernate) your computer when it's not in use.
    Obviously, leaving ANYTHING on when not in use wastes power, money, and causes needless pollution.
    But with PCs you're also GREATLY increasing the chances that your PC will be compromised by hackers if it's left on all the time – don't take my word for it, do some research.
    As someone who has been using PC's since the Apple II, and Intel 8086, and who currently owns countless PCs of every generation, I can honestly tell you leaving your PC on 24/7 only wastes power and helps hackers.

  • I'd say that all the information you provided here is 100% correct. Only, the advice just to reboot the computer, to fix some problem, should only be given, if you know that the person you're giving the advice to, is running Windows. I use Linux throughout, and under Linux, it's usually useless, to try to solve problems by rebooting. I need to slog through whatever misconfiguration is causing the bug. As a result, my Linux computers may run for 16 days, before I reboot. When I do, I usually reboot because of memory leaks in my desktop manager (I use Plasma). And, that Windows-specific problem, of the RAM caching corrupted data, hardly rears its ugly head, on a fully updated Linux computer. Only, even under Linux, one needs to reboot after a kernel update.

  • I completely believe you. But this is about as dumb a design implementation as I can imagine

  • What utter rubbish, the shut down button should be used if you want to shut down your computer.

  • Every time Microsoft says I need to restart to install updates I find my network computers disconnected from the network until I do.
    And everytime I restart due to updates the PC takes 35 minutes to start, I would disable updates if I could but because of the network disconnections I can't!

  • Very well presented video.
    I personally haven't used Windows in a while but we had an argument with a colleague 2 months ago about reboot vs shutdown vs not doing anything so I watched the video with interest.

  • You can also hit Alt+F4 with nothing open on the desktop to access a quick shutdown menu, or at least this worked in Win10. I'm running Win11, but I use StartAllBack to make Win11 look and feel like Win10 so the start menu looks like Win10's because if I wanted MacOS, I'd just get a Mac, thanks.

  • I turned fast start-up off a long time ago. With an SSD there is no need to have it on.

  • Sorry but you're completely wrong rebooting my Linux machine makes absolutely no difference. It's just inconvenient.

  • I've been doing this a VERY long time. My suggestion is sleep, without hibernate (save to RAM only, NO file for restore if theres a power outage), and a power UPS.
    Its VERY fast to shutdown and restart (seconds) . This nonsense about saving power or resetting hardware, is just that , nonsense.
