  • The Windows Firewall is an absolute must-have especially in corporate environments. Recall how devastating the WannaCry ransomware cryptoworm was back in 2017. Having the Windows Firewall enabled, blocking TCP/445, saved us from that lateral attack!

  • Yep. I use Windows firewall as just one more layer. Cheers!

  • I highly highly recommend Windows Firewall Control software by Binisoft. It's a layer above the windows firewall and when a program wants internet-access you get a popup, asking you if that's ok. You can then allow, block or allow for X minutes and it will generate a rule for blocking or allowing.

  • I've always had a looming question about this.

1st context: A firewall, generally, is to protect you from the outside network. Generally a Border/Gateway does that.
So when it came to Windows firewall, I always just had issues with programs not working. I used to disable it, but starting with win7 it had issues with printers or other shares if you disabled it. So I started just making an 'allow all' rule, then never had an issue again. But the question always remained.

Question: So who /what are you protecting to/from, by using a software firewall on the local PC, against your own PCs/network, if your real firewall is already doing the job ?

  • The Answer is yes, if its setup properly it will work properly. An extra Layer of protection is always good !

  • I dont use it, i do host alot of servers and i had headache with windows firewall is active, even alot of .exe files cant be executed when its active, my main layer of defense is the unifi next generation firewall

  • Absolutely correct. Up to Win7 SP2 it was buggy and people used to disable it. It got better with SP3 and now it is pretty useful on Win10/11.
Customize it to your needs but do not disable it, a lot of Windows services/processes depend on it being active

  • I have been using Windows firewall professionally since Windows XP.
