Faulty AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus | Can I fix it?

Hello! In this video we’re going to be looking at an AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus. It was advertised on eBay as faulty and having “No Power”.
This turned out to be a bit of an unusual repair, and I spent quite a considerable amount of time and research on it, so I hope you enjoy 🙂

I’m not an expert, but I do enjoy trying to fix things.

  • I am absolutely shocked at your knowledge of computing?? Are you self taught or did you go on a course!! I had not got a.clue what any off the stuff you were on about, I was just riding along lol 😂

  • AMAZING… When i watch you, I feel like I should be filling sandbags instead of fixing laptops. I love it lol

  • Amazing skills in fixing that. So not only can you repair circuit boards your able to diagnose a firmware problem, then source the correct firmware and program it.

  • very nice fix .. if youre time is free 🙂 Not worth for a paying customer ( buy new wil be cheaper then al the labour especially on 1ste one )

  • Hella good job, quite the investigation on this one. You should pat yourself on the back, have a drink, or whatever your routine is after a troublesome repair. Hats off to you.

  • Mad respect for staying at that… as soon as i saw the firmware was corrupt it would have been binned.. Shame there wasnt an easier way to extract the firmware and flash it again. Reverse engineering at its best 🙂

  • That sir was an Amazing find & an even more Amazing fix, nice job & great video.

  • Beyond me , but quite interesting. Thanks for the look.

  • This is an impressive fix sir, I bow to you.👍
It is all about the puzzle, isn't it ???

  • That was a heck of a journey you took us all on. Might as well have been talking Martian for a lot of it as far as I am concerned. How long did this one keep you entertained? Still loving what you do, bet you are still waiting for the call from NASA to give you the plans so you can DIY a Space Shuttle 🙂

  • Outstanding knowledge and patience which has made a fantastic video and a huge sense of achievement for you. Well done that man👍👍

  • Impressive work! I thought you'd try the SD card firmware update after you got it to boot with the wrong firmware. But your solution was even more impressive. Well done.

  • A great fix! Your early videos elude to your programming interests, so they came in extremely handy here 😊 it does look as if a firmware update went wrong or something corrupted the data and wiped everything. A great plus with your son having a similar model to get some of the info from too. A great job at getting the info from the files bit by bit, this must have took some hours to fully repair, I used to use PuTTY in the late 90's – 2000's, a great little tool for diagnosing networking errors. Most would have stopped when they found out that the firmware was toast. Loved the in – depth microscope and oscilloscope work, excellent 👏 It gives me more confidence to do more myself now, I have been repairing milwaukee / bosch tools and 2 x 110vac Trend T35 AL, M class dust extraction units in the last few weeks, so thank you for that. Looking forward to the next one 😊👍

  • Incredible, instant sub. I love that you also had the software knowledge to get a fix, I would have been stumped! Great stuff.

  • Just had to watch this un-Bricking one again. Well from 24 mins.

Love the tenacity and the fix.

I definitely think there is a need for UnBricking videos on here, but I’m guessing most bricked devices are in landfills.

Still might be a fun series to do.

Going to search in here for Bricked unbricked unbricking😂

  • what flux and low melt solder you using. I dont know any difference. thank you.

  • PuTTY is not actually a programming tool, it's a communication tool. It just so happens that due to everything being built on legacy interfaces, you can use it for that device through a COM port.

  • I am absolutely amazed with your troubleshooting skills and how you fixed this broken device.

  • Fascinating and.unusual. I’m interested to know what path you followed which gave you the knowledge to fix this sort of device. I can see the basic logic of your approach – power supplies, fuses , components but at a loss understanding architecture and firmware. Well done ! A credit to your knowledge and persistence 🙂

  • Hacker man ! Your skill and logical thinking is amazing. Today, I learned a lot from you. Thank you

  • If you haven't already, could you please document this unbrick method on a couple of the forums? iFixit is one, reddit another. Having a documented unbrick method will be really helpful to others – and as you noticed, unbrick methods for similar devices provide good clues for others.

  • Hello… Nice work man
May know what kind of sw you used for bin file sectioning and then you extracted the other files.

  • waw. you are getting a little to good! Meister fix 🙂

  • Well done. Lazy programmers didnt make a failed update something you could recover from, i bet the core app did the update function.

  • Are you an electronics engineer? I feel like you've a background in electronics or more specifically embedded systems and software.

  • Some of those devices did not break because of user error. MS yes MicroShat deployed drivers that maliciously wrote garbage to firmware of devices to disable them. It was a ploy to disable fake knock-offs of original hardware that did the same thing. The hardware manufacturers may or may not know of the knock-off hardware used because of supply and demand chains. A similar device known as a "Game Surge" were mostly affected because use of a USB interface chip was literally bricked/zero'd off in firmware because of the updated drivers MicroShat put out

  • I wonder once you had it working with the other device's firmware would you have been able to use aver's flashing software to flash the correct firmware on there? Maybe it would refuse but would have been interesting to know.

  • Nice repair. I'd do a firmware update using the official tools again just for good measure.

  • Made my weekend watching you buy it and fix it yet again. Dazzling and informative.

  • 4:27 Is that a UART header? I wonder if there's anything neat you could do with that…

  • From start to finish, how long did this TS and repair take? I'm sure you had to revisit it over at least several days or possibly weeks. If it was me, this would still be collecting dust somewhere, or yep, in the scrap heap. I would have ran out of knowledge and patience a long time ago…probably at the step where you saw power everywhere and the oscillators were all working. 😅Seems like you have a quick way to remove all of that pesky conformal coating, but I didn't catch that part.

  • Great fix as always! Its remind me some fault that i had with my phantom drone battery and i had to probe some chip on the battery board and hack the chip with raspberry pi. it was so annoying fail everytime! But it works once and thats all i needed 🎉

  • WOW, another incredible fix, lost me with the programming will need to watch again. You deserve a lot more subs.

  • Unbelievable job!!! I'm without words… really, very, very, congratulations for your skills and for each video. Thank you very much and have a good weekend!!! from Italy 🙂 (your videos are an incredible inspiration for me).

  • Your Kung Fu never ceases to amaze me, its like watching a virtuoso perform his magnum opus over and over again and words fail me. Riveting !…..cheers.

  • 2 help others u could sahe both firmwares link up in description be mint if u could please.

  • I really enjoy your channel and how you come to the conclusion to what is wrong with the items you have on your bench. It surely is a lot of experience, pain and suffering to get to that level. Although I have a Bachelors in Computer Science, I would have never imagined it would have been a software problem and it would have been scrapped for it's precious metals… lol As always, Another great fix, or should I say, PROGRAM!

  • You are far, far ahead of my level. Now if it were tubes, I stand a chance!

  • Wow Mick you’re like a dog with a bone you so good at finding the problem, I’m one of the ones that would of gave up along time ago lol
Keep em coming Mick really enjoyed it 😊
