File sharing on Windows is bad this is how to make it better
By default Windows uses SMB/CIFS, which is sub-optimal for performance and security. This is how to change to NFS and get better file sharing on any Windows machine.

linux ftp server
Thanks. I got it to mount easily but kept showing as unavailable. Had to "squash all users to admin" on Synology ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I am getting "mount: invalid option – 'anon'" can you suggest why?
In windows explorer, with an NFS share mounted at Z: I can't execute .exe files… also can't open a zip with peazip and extract to the same dir.-.. useless
I just realized you are using a NAS. I thought you were gonna share PC to PC file sharing. Got me all confused for an hour.
I don't want anything complicated, I want it to work just right out of the box with no security at all. Just work. It's like a guy that sells houses with the most complicated security config file ever ont he front doors and windows, and nobody he sells them to understands it all, so they all just have to leave their doors and windows unlocked and the system off to just simply USE their house. This is SMB and NFS. It don't work out of the box, and the config files are too complicated for anyone on earth to understand.
As soon as you said "It can't share a folder" at the 2 minute mark I was like, why did you just waste all of our time then… literally, that is file sharing, that's what we wnat.
I thought NFS on Windows was poorly written and slow. Even though SMB is slow on Lunix aren't we just moving the problem from the host to the client? PS , I have a synology nas and multiple windows pc's. The performance to the nas is awful because SMB on the Nas is poor. If I use the fast NFS on the nas and the slow NFS on the windows client, why is this better?
The only thing that proves the CVE vulnerability search is that SMB is a more widely used protocol. If you do the same search today the first 6 listed are Linux SMB implementation vulnerabilities 🤦♂
This nfs thing is so damn complicated and when you finally get through all of it, the files get all jumbled. SMB worked and was easy.
I just bought this Windows Toolbox based on this video, as I have been battling nfs mounting linux nfs exports to my windows machine. BUT the current version of the toolbox does not seem to have any tweak for NFS anymore? All I can see is a install feature under config to add NFS. But it dos not make any difference at all.
What did the config add NFS actually do?
This video is totally inaccurate. Fact. SMB supports end-to-end encryption with AES-256 cryptographic standards that is stronger than Kerberos encryption for NFS. The latest SMB 3 versions are secure, making the security level with SMB better than with NFS. And as for the speed issue, who cares about speed when transferring 1mb or less files. I think most people would want faster transfer speed for moving large media files over their network. Also NFS is faster than SMB when using encryption.
How can i mount my s8 galaxy in linux via smb or nfs ?
I tried to reproduce the positive NFS transfer rates.
I used a Proxmox Hypervisor and ran two VMs with a VirtIO network connection.
Two Windows Server 2022 VMs with internal NFS support activated. One with NFS share, one with NFS mount.
In all measurements the NFS protocol performs much much worse compared to simple CIFS. Even with small files and so on. I used diffent SSD performance measurement tools, simple file copys and running some apps from the network drive. All worse with NFS.
What am I missing?
Is the Windows Server 2022 NFS implementation that bad?
I guess the Proxmox VirtIO setup perfekt for such a compare?
from a amature hobbiest editors view. i want to collab on a local network with two computers .editing sharing and rendering animations creating image sequences . Would i simple samba file serving setup be good to start with and get thing done fast, instead of a full blown truenas setup?thx
Well, for whatever reason, my connection to my truenas server via nfs on windows hits an absolutely amazing 30mb/s transfer speeds and I can't get it to go any higher.. so smb it is for now
What about sshfs
NFS is great and I use it all the time in Linux. I followed your video on Win 10 and it works fine. However, I attempted to run it on Windows 11 and it fails big time. (It starts by saying that "The term 'nfsadmin' is not recognized as the name of the cmdlet, function, script. ) (I started the tool in powershell as an administrator but it continues to fail) (BTW, I purchased your CTT script, it is well worth it.)
Your tweet about the change in syntax is incorrect. It has not changed but there where 2 options one from DISM and one from Server Manager module. Server Manager version was the first that could use remote sources if feature source was not availble local. However that option was also later added in the DISM module. Microsoft finally decided to remove one of the 2 options because it makes no sense to have 2 teams develop and maintain the same functionality.
Ah you dick. You paywalled it.
Toolbox link broken.
0:45 green is almost unreadable
The "toolbox" link is not working.
Is there any way to get an NFS client to work on Windows 11 Home? 99% of the computers I use are Pro or Linux, there's that 1% that sneaks in with home! Driving me batty – changed my NAS to use NFS and now I have one user left out in the cold cause shes running Windows 11 Home 😔
Would love to see NFS sharing enabled on win10/11 instead of having to use server… Currently using hanewin NFS server and it's not great to install.
