Flexible Digital Modulation Testing for Satellite Regenerative Payloads
Regenerative payloads pose a variety of test challenges not found in conventional analog bent-pipe satellite testing. This paper will explore digital modulation formats used in satellite communications, including wide-band modulation, higher order modulation schemes, and custom modulation formats. Key transmitter and receiver metrics such as Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) and coded Bit Error Rate (BER) will be discussed, as well as how to measure these parameters at various stages of a transmitter and receiver chain, from digital baseband to RF. Design and simulation software will be combined with test equipment to show an integrated design-to-test flow to help minimize system integration risks, as well as to provide software-defined flexibility for the hardware test solution.
