Cities | the primary habitat of human beings- are the | source of not just our civilization’s worst problems | but the most innovative solutions to those problems as well. | Cities are also, complex adaptive systems much like ecosystems or biological organisms or organs in the human body. However, with their inclination for exponential growth and as mechanisms for massive consumption of natural resources even in the face of limitations posed by climate change, peak oil and such, cities are fast becoming the | | cancer that may bring our civilization down. We need urban development indicators that use the mathematics of complex systems to tell us when an urban form stops being a useful organ, and starts being a cancer. We have been developing just such an indicator | . An indicator that is cognizant of the complex nature of urban systems and points towards a | city structure that mimics the sustainable design commonly found in | life, nature and the universe.
