CCNA Training | Etherchannel
Welcome to CCNA Training. This series is for anyone who wants to build on their basic network skills, and even pass the CCNA 200-301 exam.
Part 1 of this series starts with Layer-2/Switching technology. This covers topics like general switching, VLANs, Interfaces, Spanning-Tree, RSTP, Etherchannels, and Power Over Ethernet (PoE).
The website has additional links for further study to take you to the next level. Links are at the end of the description.
In this video, we’re going cover:
0:00 Overview
0:18 What are Etherchannels?
2:47 Manual Etherchannel
5:03 Dynamic Etherchannel
9:46 Load Distribution
Etherchannels are also known as LAGs (Link Aggregation Group), AE (Aggregated Ethernet), port-channel, and channel-group. They are used to bundle several physical links into one logical link.
These can work manually or dynamically. In a manual etherchannel, we simply tell the switch that these links are in an etherchannel. The switch will trust us, even if we’ve made a mistake. This is configured with ‘mode on’.
In a dynamic etherchannel, a protocol like LACP (or the older PaGP) is used to pass messages between the switches. This can determine if something has gone wrong, or if we’ve made a mistake. This is configured with ‘mode active’ or ‘mode passive’.
Traffic is load-balanced across the links by creating a hash of the various fields in the packet/frame. The resulting hash determines which physical link the packet/frame passes over.
