Google Chrome isn’t as good as it used to be. While it was a great replacement for Internet Explorer and Firefox and Safari, but as it’s become the dominant browser, it seems like it ain’t quite how it used to be. And now that browsers like Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera GX and Vivaldi have all switched to run on Chromium, we decided to get to the bottom of those performance woes.

  • We used LastPass in our benchmarks because it's by far the most popular password manager. We don't use, nor recommend it.

  • On May 1st, 2024 google APIs started rejecting non-Chrome browsers (at least FF). I used the User-Agent Switcher addon to trick Google into thinking I was using Chrome. There had been no update to FF so that wasn't the problem. About a week later FF fixed it and now it's fine w/out having to spoof being Chrome.

But this goes to why Google is way too powerful. Most of you use phones but FF is about 7% of desktops and it shows how avaricious and evil Google is about controlling choice that they consider that 'too much competition'. That kind of monopoly should be broken.

Hopefully YT bots don't kill this comment.

  • Thanks people. I have appreciated your content for years, but the music? Terrible, sorry. It distracts from the message of the video and makes it hard to follow, at least for me. Makes absolutely no sense to me to have music in the background all the time in these types of videos.

    Anyway, thanks for everything. Peace.

    Anyway, thanks for everything. Peace.

  • I rather take a 50% dip in performance as long as I get to KILL all the damn adds.
I have 64Gb Ram and a hefty CPU so it is all still incredibly performant and I don't notice it.
Although clearly necessary for creators, ADs are an annoyingly prevalent menace and an end user shouldn't be forced to swallow them in such great quantity. It is too in the face and taking up entirely too much of web page (as high as 70%). So totally NOT acceptable no matter the creator's wishes or feelings.

  • I never abandoned Firefox.
No because it's good, but rather because it's the least bad…

  • The situation with FireFox won't change because Mozilla isn't investing in it properly. You can't even embed FireFox which is why no FireFox equivalent to Electron exists. Mozilla was supposed to be leading the open web, but now it's the anchor Safari and Chrome are dragging through the muck while trying to get new web technologies adopted and implemented.

  • I'm a software engineer. I actually ended up switching from LastPass to Bitwarden a bit after I discovered the perf issues its injected code was causing. Had to keep switching it off to profile performance while developing and then back on again to use it lol.

  • I use Firefox and can have as many tabs open as I like. I use an extension called 'Load Tab On Select', the tab will open and wait for you, but it only loads when you click on it.

I'd like to see a video on Firefox as I've been using it for over 12 years now.

  • Can't we just pause extensions if don't need them, rather than uninstalling them

  • While Firefox may have only 6% of worldwide users, I think the number of LTT viewers that use FF are going to be way up there, probably 30% or more. LTT should start a poll of their own

  • Firefox user here. I use AdBlock, maybe I should have a look at uOrigin again, I don't remember why I did not like it that much when I tried it.

  • Nah dawg, Chorme outright sucks.
I only have two extensions installed (needed for work) and Chrome always takes 5 to 10 solid seconds to load a page (with or without them). It felt like I was back on the dialup days. I kept soldiering on because my company relies on Google Services and I was afraid they wouldn't work on other browser, but I recently migrated to [REDACTED] and that has been the best decision ever. Back in Chrome, everyday someone in the team would say that Chrome crashed on them (me included), but since I moved to [REDACTED] I've noticed a productivity and response time bump since I'm not longer waiting for pages to load.
[REDACTED] will sometimes struggle rendering an obscure website, but the speed increase in [REDACTED] more than makes out for it. Screw Chrome, honestly

  • the main question i have is, whyh dose chrome have multiple instances running for one active window??

  • Besides familiarity, it's telling that my only other browser that isn't Firefox is Brave.
And that's reserved for anything that refuses to work on Firefox, even with a user agent switcher

  • This video lost most of its meaning when not showing the results for the same benchmark in Edge

  • Chrome sucks. At least the last time i used it some time in 2023 (it was my default browser so randomly loading websites (after closing a program for example) doesn't interfere my "real" browser). Maybe it became better, but i don't care: I'm using Firefox since 2001 when we got our first pc. Tried a few others of course (IE, Opera, Edge and two or three smaller ones).
Seeing 48 opened tabs tested makes me laugh! Last time i closed FF there were more than 1.000 tabs open (yes, one thousand). YT videos, Wikipedia articles, ebay items and so on. I jump around, open new tabs and so it goes on and on. When i notice a slowdown i check task manager. Then more than 14 GB of ram is used. I close FF, open it again and all my tabs are there again (not loaded) and i can go on. I think Chrome also "pauses" tabs, but it would be impossible to have 100+ tabs "open".
What should be better with Chrome than Firefox? Any suggestions? There are more than enough extensions to enhance functionality of FF. I see no point to use Chrome as my main browser.

  • If people just took the time to try Microsoft Edge they would never go back. I made the plunge just over a year ago and I can't say enough good thinks about Edge. The only add-on I use is uBlock Origin to stamp out popups, trackers and ads.

  • Die hard firefox user here, I have not trusted google chrome for a long time, and from what you are telling me that distrust is not unwarranted

  • My Chrome was lagging for some time, so I clicked on this video as soon as I saw it. After watching half of the vid, I paused, and switched from AdBlock to uBlock Origin. From then everything runs smoothly.

  • Chrome never had anything my Firefox didn't always have. Fucking chromium is messing with ram hard with no add-ons whatsoever.

  • Your comment of … so modern browsers need to support everything from 28-year old geocities pages to full blown photo shop clones … is IMO the reason.

It's the reason why windows was and lesser today so difficult. Windows was loathe to cut old legacy crap out of new upgrades. Why does anybody NEED to support decades old systems? Honestly, I hate this switch to having every thing in the browser. To me it makes a great program sh!t.

  • Lately i have been having issues with Chrome, most pages don't fully load and i have to refresh them 2 or 3 times until i get everything to show, happens often when loading twitch too. Does not happen on any other web browser.

  • @LinusTechTips 7:41 Don't you mean "turning Memory Saver on", since it makes tabs you're not using go inactive when it's on? 😝

  • Even with over 200 tabs open in edge it is not using 1.5gigs of ram
