Host Kernel Qualification for Cloud Computing at Scale – Fiona Meichen Liu, Google

Host Kernel Qualification for Cloud Computing at Scale – Fiona Meichen Liu, Google

The host kernel is a key software component to support running cloud workloads on virtual machines. There are two key dimensions that make kernel qualification at Google Cloud a difficult problem to solve. First, the complexity nature of the kernel, coupled with the unique and multifaceted characteristics of cloud workloads contributes to the complexity of the qualification task. Additionally, qualification at scale for a fleet of millions of machines with diverse hardware configurations introduces a spectrum of complex challenges. In this presentation, Fiona will share her experience working on kernel qualification in Cloud, describe the challenges she has faced and introduce ideas for improvements. This presentation will discuss about qualification in terms of functionality and performance, monitoring and automation infrastructure.
