How Long Does Stucco Last with Painting

How Long Does Stucco Last with Painting.
What’s the Life Expectancy of Painted Stucco.
Stucco painting maintenance ideas and consequences.

Folks, have you ever considered the care and maintenance of your stucco home, or are you wondering whether stucco deteriorates? No.
However, the wood that surrounds windows, doors, and other areas actually needs more maintenance by painting than the stucco siding, especially where the sun and rain hit it the hardest. Thats life.

A word about this video: A few areas were beaten up. However, the GC repaired everything that needed attention quite thoroughly, and it now needs simple maintenance to last a few hundred more years.

Although stucco is one of the most durable surfaces or cladding available, it, like everything in life, has to be maintained for longevity.

Traditional stucco usually requires repainting every 7 to 10 years.
Thus, buy the best primer and paint available so you won’t have to do it so often.
I own a wooden home and paint, it seems, every 7 years; it sucks, but the alternative to doing nothing is much more work in the future.

  • In Canada, because of the extreme temperatures, Stucco goes through a pretty rough time.
The worst thing is when we apply in minus temperatures. We must make sure that we cover and heat until it completely dries. If not, then it will freeze and create a big problem.
Other than that, 50 years is easy, for us. But maybe not for others. Lol😊
Have a great day, fellow Plasterer

  • The man! The Legend! Kirk is a Mortar Forker! Love ya Kirk! Keep working hard to keep young in body and mind!

  • Kirk, love your videos, you mentioned painting stucco what about fog coating? Thanks.

  • Kirk I know you're a stucco guy but you did show an episode where you repaired your driveway living in Calf. what works like that in the midwest cold winters and snow??

  • Very different advice from what you've said in the past where cementitious products rather than latex/plastic coatings, like paint or synthetic stuccos were recommended. I understand patching cracks, but when did the advice change from fog coat to paint?
I was under the impression that after six or seven coats of paint the permeability of the paint would be so reduced that the stucco would no longer be able to breathe , and then it'd have to be stripped using soda blasting, or, worse, replacing the stucco. Plus, paint it once and you have to repaint it every four to seven years which adds $400-$700 per year to the cost of ownership.
It's not my problem anymore, but, I hate paint ever since my old HOA got convinced by the property management company that they should force everyone to "modernize" the color palette (the more knowledgeable pushed back saying there wasn't anything wrong with the stucco they had as long as they washed it with a soft bristle brush every year or so, but others got stuck painting dark brown). Non-resident HOA Board members don't listen to reason when they believe they can increase rents by accepting advice from professional property management companies.

  • Paint is good but what about fog coat?….I was a patch man for Dutchman Plastering for a bit and I heard paint doesn't let the stucco walls breath…. please chime in.

  • I enjoy the videos you do kirk, how do you quote your windows patches and or doors. Do you have a price for just patches, and how do you give a quote for new build homes

  • Are you associated with the Kirk Giordano TikTok account or is someone stealing your content?

  • I know lawyers who wear white shirts that, at the end of the day, aren’t as clean as Kirk’s.
Amazing. I can’t get enough of his videos.
A true master at work here

  • I know sand and cement render i think first fifthy years gets stronger after that starts to go back in ireland i think

  • I agree with Kirk. Wood siding if painted and maintained also lasts, and is more tolerant to movement. I took original cedar siding off my 100 year old home and it was only painted twice but the pieces that still had paint were fine. Unfortunately cheap people buy cheap houses and just drive them into the ground. Maintenance always key. Lookin good Kirk 👍

  • Stucco is thousands of years old. Modern paints are a pretty recent invention. Paints a funny thing. In a system that's meant to be painted with modern paint, its great. On old old stucco, you gotta consider about a dozen things. Moisture. vapor permeability, insulation, solid stone wall or veneer with a vapor channel between them, seasonal temperatures, frost. I think they're still trying to figure things out in England where there's a lot of solid stone buildings, that lack insulation, set in a damp location. These new vapor permeable paints seem to be interesting. Maybe that's part of the solution. Stucco's not an easy thing. That's why 40 years of experience is a good thing.

  • @kirk would you do a video on stucco in cold climates, include efis vs tradition lathe systems, 2-3 coat.

  • Kirk! I just bought a ruins of a frame built/stucco shack in SE Az. Can you do a consult via email? Surprisingly, for a 1903 shack the stucco is not going anywhere despite things settling. I’m going to do a rubble/stone knee wall around the base. Overhangs will protect much of the structure. How can I go ever existing stucco? I can see they used chicken wire. I want to smooth out some areas.. anyways, thank you and lmk if an email would be more appropriate.. I’d gladly pay for your time/wisdom/insights✨🌸🤗

  • I don't stucco, but this guy is the bomb 😊and enjoy watching 😉

  • Thanks for sharing this valuable information 👍👍 I have all these issues on my house. It was a great question and an amazing answer sir

  • Thanks , my house was built in 1984,line wire ,one thin layer of paper ,then lath, unfortunately they nailed the tudor trim on over the lath i wish they would have put the trim over the brown coat. stucco has never been painted paper still looks new. i see alt of home that are one kote painted that are 15 / 20 years old that fail, i was thinking of re browning my house with a thin layer then acrylic , paint might draw water attention to the tudor trim ? what do you think.?

  • Kirk, you are absolutely correct, every 7 to 10 years if you spray the paint on the stucco, maybe 15 to 20 if you roll it and it also varies with the quality of the paint. Thanks for this video!

  • You've got such a great touch at your trade, you have become a natural. I am getting better from watching your vids, and practicing myself. I really like the medium.., and not many people can do it professionally, there is a lot to know! I know chemistry pretty well, and chemistry is a big part of building science. You often point that out!

  • The pyramids and the phenix was made out of plaster , straw and mortor
That's 2000 years, give or take

  • Hi Kirk. An unrelated question: If I do not have access to Tyvek or similar building wrap, what type of liquid seal should I use to coat marine plywood exterior walls to protect against moisture? Thank you for your answer and all your videos.

  • Patrick, I'm from Midwest USA, I think it's a freeze and thawing issue ✌️

  • High quality videos 👍my dad was an Ironworker, I was a waterproofing contractor. Maintenance is crucial.

  • Thank you for giving me tips on stucco. It was enjoyed on a Saturday evening to just relax and let Kirk provide insight into where all the brick homes in California went. Each earthquake made less and less. The wind didn't blow it down, but the earthquake did.
