  • I'm watching this a year and a half after you posted it. Really helped me out. Very educational. Thank you!!!

  • DNS server is what is known as a domain name server. It translates IP address into common names like website names.

  • Does it cost to have a personalized DNS in starlink? I ask you because the starlink router has that function to customize the DNS.

  • For StarLink, you can set the DNS through the app now.

  • Hi JC.. this is a great video thanks!! All the extra info at the beginning was perfect. However, when I run ipconfig -all | findstr "DNS Servers" I get an IPV6 address returned instead of an IPV4 IP. So it's not entirely clear to me if the router is using the Google DNS. I'm using a Gen2 Starlink router and having some issues with certain URLs not resolving around 16 hours after rebooting the router.

I'm just going to try the Cloudflare DNS and see how it goes. But just wondering if you have any advice for those who get an IPV6 address returned for their DNS Server.

  • So something strange happened when I followed your instructions for identifying my DNS server it seems to be producing a bunch of letters and a bunch of numbers nothing like I've ever seen before. Any idea what this might be?

  • But what if you are using the NETWORK Cable adaptor to hook the starlink in my ASUS router. In order to get it to work, I had to manually select the DNS in the router setup. Starlink/with the CAT6 cable adaptor, does not have a DNS server.

  • I just got starlink a couple weeks ago and 'the starlink app under advanced settings theres an option to set a custom DNS server' now.
this was a great video with allot of great info, im glad i stumbled across your channel.

  • The starlink app now has an option for custom DNS. Assuming this is now handled better by starlink.

  • If you run RING devices just note that some, the doorbell cam's, don't work with "AX" so you'd lose your cameras. Also my statically configured dns server shows as "none".

  • How much of a speed bump does doing this actually bring you

  • Mr. Cristina; what's the possibility of you doing an updated version of this and include IPV6?

  • There is another consideration, besides speed, OpenDNS allows accounts so that you can block requests… e.g. known phishing, while one cannot rely upon it alone, it does provide some protection to family on my network. I cannot attest to whether they sell data but would not put it past any group so…

  • Hello. What means TTL in CMD? TTL very high on Google dns. Others much lower. But MS very similar.

  • I got Starlink in early 2021 and when I first got it I had speeds over 600 Mbps. About 6 months ago my speed fell off to 20-30 Mbps. I have tried everything in this video and still 20-30 Mbps. Thank God they just ran fiber to my home!

  • I'm getting a constant 200-300 ping while I'm playing games and I have starlink and idk what to do about it

  • You can change the dns on the app

  • Starlink app (Gen 1) has the option for custom DNS. Path: Settings-WIFI Configuration-Advanced-Custom DNS

  • Hello again.
I don't know if this works on Gen 2 but on my Gen 1 router in options I have a new option called Custom DNS.

  • I'm an older GenX luddite. This is the first person to explain internet technology to me in a way I can actually understand. It's always a huge relief for me when I find a good teacher, and this was one I really needed.

  • Privacity using Google DNS? You are only giving to Google all your access. 🤣 More than usually already do.

  • Hey JC, I noticed within the settings on the starlink mobile app, we are now able to set custom DNS, would this function the same as what you describe in this video?
