Every computer connected to a network is given a unique identifier for the network it is on. For most people, this comes in the form of an IPv4 or an IPv6 network address. This address is extremely important when it comes to troubleshooting network issues.
Identifying the IP address through the command prompt, as shown in this video, can help determine if your computer is properly connected to your local network. It can also determine if your network card is even installed (or is functioning) properly.
Depending on the network you are connected too you may see different numbers for your IP address. If you’re connected to a home network, the first 3 sets of digits xxx.xxx.xxx will likely match the gateway address. If they do not, there may be an issue with your local network.
