Always loving you folk and certainly your chat discussions…some new and welcome. Hopefully, your plans are still to see Japan, Alaska and sliding down the B.C. Coast….so waiting, so looking forward.
Hello text me when you start sail tomorrow morning
I recommended your channel to my husband (who is on relocation for work) who is binge watching you now he loves you guys
Regarding the stepping off deck when docking I think the height of the freeboard is a factor as well in how easy it is to get on/off. I remember having a conversation with my husband when watching Ruby Rose, a younger couple struggling with clambering on/off the boat
ColRegs we’re set up in 1970s to unify the international rules.
Motor cones normally only used for yacht master exams. Cone shows power vessels know the pecking order has changed as both of you are now power vessels
I’ve missed some episodes, so what happened to destination Japan?
you are among the best that there is available . thanks so much for sharing
We bought our first sailboat ruffly 6 months ago,she is a steel 40 foot cc roberts spray ketch, no sailing experience (lots of small power boat experience and worked at a slipway), we motored her the 450nm home and have been living aboard and refitting her ever since. When we get a nice weather window we shoot over to fraser island. I have learned alot about boat systems haha
I agree that we need light down low on our boats, i come home from work at night and when there is no moon the anchor lights look like stars as i come up river, i have strung up some cheap solar fairy lights around the lifelines so it's easy to see and it makes it easier to pick our boat in a busy area
very informative discussion…….great
Just a guess…If the anchor light is at eye level then you could easily loose sight of it when it is obscured by shore lights, houses, business' etc.
My anchor light is at spreader height and I thought the rule of thumb was not more then 6 metres above the hull
Hi Liz and Jamie, love the podcast format (we watch the video). Re the strobes. I understand that many in SE Asia use them but my opinion is that they are not good. White strobes are on life jackets and should be reserved for safety applications. The colregs don't require an anchor light at the top of the mast. Quite the contrary and you are allowed to – and with led low power lights it's now feasible to – light the boat up like an Xmas tree. The following are the 2018 rules. Rule 30 Anchored Vessels and Vessels aground (a) A vessel at anchor shall exhibit where it can best be ** seen ***: (i) (ii) in the fore part, an allround white light or one ball; at or near the stern and at a lower level than the light prescribed in sub paragraph (i), an allround white light (b) A vessel of less than 50 metres in length may exhibit an all– round white light where it can best be seen instead of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule. (c) A vessel at anchor *** may ****, and a vessel of 100 metres and more in length shall, also use the available working or equivalent lights to illuminate her decks. Regards Ian
So great you have internet out there for your podcast. Internet coverage is good generally in Indonesia because there are people living everywhere.
No question, to keep fit is absolutely necessary when living on a boat. But jumping from the boat to a dock should be avoided whenever possible especially when docking. One better practice to throw lines and catch cleats and then climb off the boat in a better controlled way. Too many accidents happen when jumping while docking. Thanks you Liz and Jamie for your work and insights 🙏. Fair winds, Günther
Hi Guys, I really enjoy these podcasts and how they dovetail neatly with your Vlogs…please, please keep up these wonderful chats.
I'm 51 and just about to retire from my current job after 30yrs and plan to buy my first sailing yacht. I'm late to the sailing fraternity after being introduced to it by an old colleague who owns Bluegrass on the West Coast of Scotland about 4 years ago.
Anyway the yacht is to have some adventures with my friends/family and also to provide my grandchildren with lots and lots of memories whilst we teach them how to sail etc.
Exciting times and your weekly Vlogs and Pods definitely whet the appetite.
Stay safe guys 🇬🇧⛵
Re añchor lights:- Not too many years ago, all aircraft used to exhibit a single non-flashing white light/lights on the tail, to indicate their existence to any following aircraft. Now days, all aircraft display white strobe/flashing lights, which obviously makes it far easier for any following aircraft to identify the aircraft in front on a star filled night. The aviation industry has advanced. The colregs (regarding anchor lights) are "light years" behind.
I first learned of Fresnel lenses when studying Optics at uni. If I recall correctly the original useage was in Lighthouses, which I guess makes them an appropriate tool for nautical use 😄.
With the advent of GPS plotters there are many who have no idea of the rules
An all round light that does not have any obstructions and also visible for 2 miles. Anchor light for college and I use a deck light set into the boom lighting up the deck. LED
