How To Fix Slow Boot In Ubuntu 16.04 – 17.10 : Home Encryption Bug

If you’ve encrypted your home folder then you’re likely running into this bug where you have an extremely slow 2 minute plus boot time. This is a quick fix that allows you to resolve the issue in Ubuntu 17.04 & tested on 17.10 version. This impacted both of my machines that I tried Ubuntu on and this fix worked perfect.

gksudo gedit /etc/crypttab
remove UUID line
add /swapfile
Save
Reboot

source

  • Hi, I have a problem and I can't find the solution. My Ubuntu's startup is really slow, i've tried to do your solution but, when I open /etc/crypttab, the file is just empty. I've tried with gedit and geany.

  • Dear DAS, I have a fresh install of 17.10 with encryption. Installed gksudo and when I input the command I get the following error "Failed to run gedit '/etc/crypttab' as user root.

Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file."

I am running an ASUS U47A with 8gb RAM / i5 2650m. My boot time is horrendous, it will reach the passkey quickly enough but once inserted it takes about a full minute or multi minute (its variable) boot time to load Ubuntu.

Any help would be much appreciated!
