How to restore any old computer with Linux (Ubuntu, Linuxmint)

STOP!!! You dont’ have to buy a new computer!!! If your computer used to work but is starting to become a slug. Try Linux. I find it works better on all my older computers (10 years old).

Think about how you use your computers. The majority of people don’t need a Mac book or a $1000 computer. With the right OS, you can keep that out computer working just fine (Ubuntu, Mint).

Sorry about the static noise. Still trying to sort that out.

  • Hail Linux mint, Hail Linux mint, Hail Linux mint I pay you homage to the Gods of Pcs…

  • Al my old PCs and Macs from 2007-2009 run Linux Mint & MX Linux and work fine.

  • I got a stuffed penguin and it didn't work. What now? =(

  • I have an emachines with an intel core 2 duo. The only pc I've ever bought. Still runs with linux.

  • I have a pretty old PC and its running ubuntu 19 really smoothly

  • I got a Dell dimension 4700 just put Linux mint and updated it all last night don't seem to run to bad it's got 3.5gb of ram and it has Intel Pentium 4 3.0ghz with hyper threading

  • just went with mint 19.1 Tessa Mate for an old Acer aspire One Netbook. Had upgraded to windows 7 and it was just too much to be that functional. We used it often to travel with and for two trade shows we attend. So far the mint has been better. Only problems I have run into are 1. it does not charge as quickly as in windows. 2. Having to sign on to my home Wifi every time I start my computer at home is annoying.
Thinking about trying it on an old Emachine tower computer that is quite old. Just for fun. Good video.

  • Test lubuntu as the resource-intensive OS. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are too slow for those specs. And if you love older console games, test with RetroPie or another emulator frontend "OS" (Lakka, EmulationStation, RecalBox, batocera.linux). Those can be installed on USB/other flash for testing, and if you like it enough, you could install it on the main storage drive. And I highly recommend at least a cheap SSD.

  • This was just like a pitch for Linux… I'm already sold on Linux but looking for how to put it on a broken old windows computer. Where was the How to portion of this video?

  • i got peppermint but no apps i need work with it

  • Will this work ok with Amd Hd 1.40ghz 4gb ram 500gb hard drive please let me know thanks

  • MX Linux is worth a look. I'm running it in persistent mode off an 8 GB 2.0 flash drive. I generally use Lubuntu for renewing the usability for old PC's though. Lightweight and, most importantly, Grandma friendly.

  • 😁😁😁😁😁😁how to restore?…reuse u mean…because they are reusable 700% more…
An angel called Spatry…sad dat…LINUX DOSE WAT WINDOWS DONT…700% true…
    Before wasin' t unusable…was UNDER WINDOWS 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

  • me.
    Debian
    Linux Lite
    Ubuntu Mate
    fedora

my favorites all installed on my old pc and laptops. just add more cheap secondhand Ram sticks im happy.

Making Much more sense to donate my money to linux developer than paying already super rich microsoft mofos.

  • I started using Linux Mint Mate last week because my 11 inch laptop has only 2GB RAM and Windows 10 ran very slow on it.

Unfortunately, the RAM is soldered on the motherboard and there are no room for expansion.

I know xfce, xubuntu and lubuntu are lighter than mint mate, but I'm very comfortable with it on my mini laptop. Mint mate is only using around 500MB of RAM on idle. Windows 10 for some reason was using more than 90% on idle.

  • My 12 year old laptop is being revived with ubuntu. The HDD broke and the repairman said to use ubuntu with live usb:) so excited!!!!!!!!:)

  • That satisfaction feeling that you get when you restore something… mannn its soo goooood

  • I have old celeron cpu, can i use 32inch FHD monitor with it for normal streaming and light gaming for my mom? Please reply

  • 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

  • Jesus crist get to the fucking point already! 3 mins. Of Bullshit!!!

  • Putting Ubuntu on an old Dell Dimensions with the classic Pentium 4 and 2 gigs of ram. You think 16.04 will be too much for it? Should I be using 14.04?

  • A question I have window 7 will the programs I have on my computer now run on Ubuntu?

  • There are other Ubuntu forks like Lubuntu and Xubuntu, they use much less resources and are significantly faster than Windows 7 and Windows 10 on my 8-year-old laptop.

  • I run Linux mint on all my computers about 4 years now I don't need windows one reason it's faster is you don't have a anti virus running in the background

  • Both Windows 7 and Linux Mint has the same performance on my old DELL Inspiron 546 from 2008. Linux runs faster on old hardware? News flash! So does Windows 7!

  • i try to play gta 5 on my 300$ computer with windows 8.1 xd

  • Unless your old computer is 64bit, you will not be able to install new software unless the software you install is open source, and you know how to use make.

  • People still use windows? I am shocked I figured everyone would switch to Linux long time now.

  • please stop calling ubuntu linux. They even opted the word "linux" out of their product name. Yes it has roots in linux but by now it has been trampling upon almost all the values linux was based on. Mint? Yes good pick! I recommend mate over unity because of less fluff and system requirement.

  • I use to have that emachines grey and black, but now have an emachines t3646 with 2 gigs, amd athelon 64×2 and amd Radeon 54 something in it.

  • Microsoft has pissed me off with all the garbage windows pretty much anything newer that windows 7 is garbage so I've been slowly learning linux and I think I will start running linux on all my pc

  • Windows 10 runs on lower resource systems. However I find that Linux works better on older systems with 2gb or less ram.
Because Linux doesn't require virus protection you save on system resources. At idle my Windows 10 install consumes around 800 mg of ram. Open a few browser tabs on Firefox and I'm around 2gb of ram. Not that bad on a machine with 4gb of ram or more but could be on one with only 2gb.

Linux uses a different file system and you don't usually have problems with fragmentation. Something that can happen when you install and remove programs on Windows. That said. Older computers can be made faster with a SSD. Overall I think for the casual computer user who uses their system for Facebook, shopping or browsing Linux is great.

  • Lubuntu works just fine on my Dell Latitude D410 that used to run Windows XP.

  • Try on Lubuntu or Ubuntu Mate(Mah-tey) for lower end machine/pc or even
Puppy Linux runs on RAM/Flash drive or can install on a HDD. Not gonna
tell to use the Arch Linux for new users. For the newbies/noobs Mint is
great rather than Ubuntu(from my using experiences). Nice vid, thanks.

  • For $40.00 i bought a old Dell Duo Core with 2 gigs of ram. Then i put Linux on it and it runs just great.
