How to setup modded Minecraft Server 1.18.1 in Ubuntu

While learning Linux I figured a few months ago why not create and maintain a Minecraft server to help teach me the ins and outs and also have a place for friends and family to play.

This video will cover everything from downloading the files to configuring and starting your first modded Minecraft Server version 1.18.1!

  • you just stopped after updating Java.. there are a lot of more options to choose from. I made a new Virtuel Machine and i cant use your tutorial.

  • My server is not visible in the lan network. The firewall is off, the ports are correct, the IP is correct, yet the server is still not found. What am I doing wrong? It is not the first time hosting minecraft servers, but the first time on ubuntu. Any ideas? I control the server by remote from my main pc so I know the connection is valid.

  • I followed this guide but when i run the server it doesen't load the mod. I remove the world folder. renamed the modfile.zip to modfile.jar put it in mods folder. but nothing happens, the server starts with "new world" but not loding the mod. downloaded from curseforge.

  • For everyone running in the Command Line only. Use this command

    java -jar YOURFORGEVERSION.jar –installServer

    it will skip the Gui

  • Straight forward and to the point. Great tutorial.

  • Uhm, how do I start the server again if I powered it off?

  • When I run the install server for the forge installer, I get all the files except the run.bat and run.sh . I re ran the install multiple times and I double checked to make sure it was server install, along with following the exact same steps from the vid. No idea why those files wont show up.

  • Great video! Just one quick question, do all mods/modpacks run off java 17, or do some still use Java 8?

  • It would be cool if you could go over how to turn this bash script into a script that utilizes screen so the server doesn't terminate if you close the gui.

  • How do you save and exit out of the vim

  • Hello, I installed forge server the same way that you did but the run.sh run.bat and usr.jvm_args.txt are missing, there are only forge installer, Minecraft server jar, Forge server jar and installer logs on the directory. What can be the issue?

  • I downloaded the mods from curse forge and dragged them into my mods folder, but when i try to run the server a ton of errors pop up and it stops. I have no idea what im doing wrong. please help me

  • @Cyber_Me very informative tutorial, however to keep my server lightweight i am only using cli, i have experience with linux gui and wanted the challenge of setting it up completely cli, my issue is that i don't really know how to install the mods to the folder from cli, as well as the forge jar file. Any help is appreciated, you're doing gods work now.

  • how do i install the java libraries ? please help, i need for minecraft version 1.19

  • Not sure if this a good question or not but will this work for modded 1.12.2?

  • Do you know a way to do this but headless? My server is running on Ubuntu Server so

  • that server only work on local network right?
or can you connect from outside the network?

  • i get this error when i try to run after adding the mods
[main/ERROR] [ne.mi.fm.lo.ModSorter/LOADING]: Missing mandatory dependencies: minecraft, minecraft, minecraft

  • Great video!! One question, what version of linux are you on and are you using x86 or Arm?

  • Okay ima be completely candid with ya here… I'm a baby, fresh out of the box, my first VM, Ubuntu user….so please…for the love of all that is holy…don't skip the small steps. they may not seem big to you. but to me. they are HOURS of troubleshooting trying to find out what tf VIM is or how you "magically" saved this file with no on screen input to us plebeians. (I am stuck on that part right now.) Because of this, you have turned this 13 min video into a 3 hour struggle fest. so please for your next video, or maybe an expansion on this one, or maybe if you give me a call and hold my hand through the entire thing… Don't…for the love of all that is computers… skip the small steps. (maybe my next cyder filled rant will have a better flow to it)

  • Why can‘t my friends join the Server but I can

  • I'm guessing that the process is very similar with Fabric, do you have a video about that?

  • Do I need the mods installed on the Windows Minecraft Forge launcher as well for them to show up?

  • I got my server to load but when I go into the server none of my mods are there. The way I installed the mods to the VM is by using the VM's Firefox and then copying the file from the downloads to my mods folder. Is that the correct way to do it or am I supposed to do it a different way so that it works

  • hi, I have installed a Minecraft server in java on an ubuntu server, but to start it when the machine start I always have to go to the correct folder and write -java -jar Minecraft_server, etc. is there a way to start it automatically when the server start?

  • I ran into a problem when I installed Forge. After installing Forge and running the "ls" command, "run.sh" or "run.bat" did not show up. How can I fix that?

  • This is amazing. Subscribing

  • Very nice tutorial! If you are still planning on doing so, I'll be looking forward to your video on your bash scripts you use to keep the server up and perform backups.

  • thank you SO MUCH i didn't know the command to start the server (very new to linux) and it was right here + a bucnh of extras TYSM

  • This was clean and straight to the point. Loved this man

  • I don’t get any of the run.bat, run.sh, or user files that you get
