HOWTO! Turn off annoying Ubuntu Pro advertising, e.g. for Ubuntu 22.04
Are you also annoyed by messages like:
“Get more security updates though Ubuntu Pro with ‘esm-apps’ enabled”
when you update your Ubuntu system in the terminal with APT? No problem! I’ll show you 5 possible ways out and of course how you can get over it.
Commands:
Goto directory:
cd /etc/apt/apt.conf.d
Backup file
sudo cp -p 20apt-esm-hook.conf $USER/Downloads
Truncate file
sudo truncate -s0 20apt-esm-hook.conf
check empty file
cat 20apt-esm-hook.conf
redo upgrade command
sudo apt upgrade
Advert is gone!! 🙂

I am fine with the adverts because they are not on my face (I don't have to click somewhere to close them) and they are not personalized based on my data. I use Ubuntu only on my work computer (Use Endeavor on my personal computer). So I don't care if it has pro and my company pays for security services from some other vendor (I think McAfee). I don't think there is anything wrong with Pro, a company has to make money in some way to pay the developers. There will, of course, be two classes, one that pays for everything and one that gets most of the stuff for free.
I just subscribed for a free Ubuntu Pro. I get no more ads.
